The Regional Ministry of Education and Vocational Training will put out to tender the project for the expansion of the La Cala Secondary School (IES La Cala) during 2025. This was announced on Friday 6th by the regional delegate, Miguel Briones, and the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), who were accompanied by the councillor for Education, Juan José Torres Trella (PP); the headmaster of the school, Sergio Sánchez; and Luminita Nicolescu, representative of the El Torreón Parents' Association (AMPA EL Torreón).
The mayoress of Mijas expressed her satisfaction with this announcement, which, in her opinion, is a firm commitment from 'Junta de Andalucía' to provide the municipality with infrastructure in line with its growth: "The population of Mijas has grown significantly. Many families choose to live in our municipality, which makes it necessary to have adequate infrastructure. In this regard, working with the various administrations is essential and, in the specific case of the education department, this relationship is very close and we are working towards a common goal". According to Mata, "the centre will go from having two Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) classes and two 'Bachillerato' classes to having five ESO classes and five 'Bachillerato' classes, that is, 12 more classrooms, in addition to a restructuring of the centre, which currently provides education for many children in the area. This restructuring will also be adapted to this growth".

- Se va a incorporar al centro una nueva parcela, de tamaño similar a la actual, con la que la superficie total alcanzará los 10.575 metros cuadrados.

During his visit to Mijas, Briones recalled that the IES La Cala, which was built around 2006 with a D2 B2.2 structure (two lines of Compulsory Secondary Education and two lines of Bachillerato), "has gradually expanded its educational provision to meet the needs of the school population, which has led to the installation of temporary modular classrooms. At present, the school has 620 students".
The planned expansion will provide the centre with the space required for a D5 B5.5 model (five lines of ESO and five lines of Bachillerato) through the construction of a new building adjoining the existing one, which will include 12 new classrooms for secondary and Bachillerato, along with the other teaching spaces required.
Additionally, the existing building will be reconfigured and renovated to provide the rest of the necessary facilities. To carry out the work, a new plot of land, similar in size to the current one, will be added to the centre, bringing the total area to 10,575 square metres. This project, which already has the necessary approval, has an estimated budget of 4.12 million euros.

- La ampliación prevista supondrá dotar al centro de los espacios propios de un modelo D5 B5.5 (5 líneas de ESO y 5 de Bachillerato).

For us, both for the representative of the El Torreón parents’ association, for myself, and for the entire teaching staff, this is both a source of gratitude and a cause for celebration”, said the headmaster of the IES La Cala, Sergio Sánchez, adding that "step by step, progress is being made. The important thing, as both the delegate and the mayoress have said, is that we recover the spaces we’ve lost so that ultimately the students are the ones who benefit”.
27 million for education
Briones expressed his satisfaction at this "long-awaited" news, which will continue to respond to the population growth in the area, just a few months after the official opening of the new IES Ana Carmona 'Veleta', "the largest centre in the autonomous community", said the delegate. "Mijas is one of the municipalities where the Junta de Andalucía is focusing its greatest efforts on education, with an investment of over 27 million euros, which has enabled or will enable us to undertake up to 26 projects to build, expand, adapt, and improve schools since 2019", Briones stressed. "I must express my gratitude for this significant investment that the Junta de Andalucía team led by President Juanma Moreno has made here in our municipality since 2019", said Mata.
Institutional collaboration
The delegate also thanked the Mijas Town Hall for its work, as "these actions would be impossible without the collaboration of the Town Hall, which is responsible for providing the land for these projects". The head of Education also stressed that "this commitment goes beyond infrastructure, it’s also about ensuring the human resources that improve the quality of education".
