The meeting, held on Monday, explored the importance of promoting renewable energy, reforestation programmes, and the creation of new natural spaces

Mayors and mayoresses from the Malaga metropolitan area, including the town of Mijas, gathered on Monday for a new discussion forum at the Malaga City Hall. Organised once again by the Ciedes Foundation, this edition of the Global Metropolis forum focused on “green” projects that promote human, animal, plant, and environmental health. Among the main topics discussed were proposals for municipalities to support the development of renewable energy, reforestation initiatives, and natural green spaces.

"It was a very interesting meeting", said the mayoress of Mijas Ana Mata (PP), "in which we also analysed air and water quality and how we should work to make cities more environmentally friendly", she added. During the meeting, small strategies to combat climate change were also presented, including simple examples such as the renaturalisation of school playgrounds and public buildings, the installation of permeable surfaces to filter rainwater and the planting of low-allergenic trees. "Local councils also have a responsibility to promote these kinds of initiatives, especially the creation of more green spaces, as trees should be part of our habitat due to the many benefits they provide", said Mata.

Measures that already take into account the new Animal Welfare Law were also discussed, some of which emphasise the proliferation of species such as tiger mosquitoes, feral cats and wild boars. "A few years ago, we were talking about invasive species, but they are no longer invasive. They are now part of our habitat and that also brings responsibility because as we must manage and control this new fauna settling in our territory”, said the mayoress of Mijas.

For his part, the president of the Malaga Provincial Council, Francisco Salado, outlined several programmes launched by the provincial authority in this environmental field, such as the promotion of reforestation campaigns in different municipalities, the creation of the Guadalhorce Green Corridor, the search for new renewable energies such as biomass, and the development of the Senda Azul programme, "With Senda Azul, we aim to recover and reforest all our seabeds, working in collaboration with the University of Malaga, the Junta de Andalucía and the town councils of the Malaga coast", he concluded.
