We begin our overview of leisure and cultural activities in Mijas with Sunday, as May 25th is the day when Las Lagunas celebrates its traditional ‘romería’ (pilgrimage) in honour of the Virgen de la Paz (Our Lady of Peace). The Brotherhood of Jesús Vivo is responsible for organising the event this year, in collaboration with the Town Hall. This year is particularly special, as it marks the 40th anniversary of both the event and the image of the Virgin.
The pilgrimage will be preceded by a mass at 10:30 hours, after, at around 11:15 hours the Virgen de la Paz will be placed on her cart, decorated for the occasion, to begin her journey. During the procession, she will be accompanied by three other carts, one prepared by the brotherhood and the other two by the Nueva Laguna and María Zambrano associations. The route will follow Avenida de Los Lirios, Avenida de Las Margaritas, Calle Antonio Machado, and the Venta de La Morena roundabout, until it reaches the river and ends at the chapel in El Esparragal park. There will be a stop for refreshments at the El Cartujano estate, where the riders from the Peña Caballista will join the journey. The Unión del Cante Choir will enliven the procession. On arrival at El Esparragal, there will be a gathering with neighbours and visitors, and the Town Hall will offer a paella for 500 people. The bar will be run by the Federation of Associations of Mijas. At 17 hours there will be a horse dressage exhibition. There will also be entertainment and a competition with various prizes for participants.
As a new feature, Department for Festivities will be providing a shuttle bus service for attendees, running every half hour from the Las Lagunas fairground to El Esparragal park from 12 to 20 hours.
The day before, on Saturday 24th at 19 hours, a flamenco mass will be held at the Parish Church of San Manuel González, sung by the Santiago de Mijas Choir, and will also include a floral offering. The brotherhood invites all those attending to dress as 'romeros' to enhance the occasion.
Saturday
We also have a flamenco afternoon on the agenda, which will take place at the Peña del Sur in La Cala from 16:30 hours, with Manuel Gómez “El Ecijano” singing and Carlos Haro accompanying on guitar.
Solidarity also features on our leisure and entertainment agenda. The Cudeca Foundation invites us to take part in the Walkathon 2025 this Saturday 24th. The meeting point is Calle Torrevigía, on the seafront promenade in Torrevieja, where the two organised routes will begin, one 10 kilometres long, starting at 10 hours, and the second, five kilometres long, starting an hour later, at 11 hours. The programme of activities also includes a big Holi party, live music, zumba and yoga sessions, children's games, lunch and a charity raffle. Registration costs 7 euros for children and 15 for adults and can be done via website www.cudeca.org or on the day at a registration point that will be set up on Calle Torrevigía. The registration fee includes a welcome pack with an official T-shirt, a plate of paella or a hot dog, a bag of coloured Holi powder, water, fruit and sunscreen.
Don't miss the semi-final of the 11th 'Espetos' (Skewered Sardines) Competition, which will take place at the Torreón de La Cala beach from 18 hours. Until midnight, you can enjoy a large public 'sardinada' by the sea, along with live music and bar service. This is an initiative of the Costa del Sol Business Circle, in collaboration with the Mijas Town Hall.
Sunday
Those who are most supportive also have a date on Sunday. The La Cala Lions Club is organising its spring fair and fashion show. The event will take place in the Butibamba Park in La Cala de Mijas, starting at 11 hours. Admission is free and attendees will also be able to enjoy entertainment, craft stalls, food and exclusive clothing that will be on sale during the day at the event and for six days in their shops.
