A feline decade

The Mijas Felina association celebrated its tenth anniversary with a big party in La Cala

Mijas Felina is celebrating a milestone. On Sunday 18th, the association held a big party in the La Cala de Mijas Branch Office Square to mark its tenth anniversary. The project began with just four cat-loving women and has now grown into a large family, with around 40 members who are actively involved, while others contribute in different ways.

“From my perspective, I’m very happy because there are many members involved, and then there are those who just pay their dues, which I also think is fantastic. I always say that everyone should do what they can and what they want, and everything that can be done is welcome. I think the association is much more united now”, said the president of Mijas Felina, Cristina Sánchez.  “Mijas Felina is now ten years old and we have organised a big party with performances, a market to raise funds and we are also selling homemade food”, said the secretary, Manuela Bernardo.

Institutional support

The councillor for Animal Welfare in Mijas, Marco Cortés (PP), took part in the celebration. “Mijas Felina is a very important association in the municipality and receives a grant from the Town Hall. It has a large number of feeders, which is a great support for the Town Hall. Without them, the TNR method (which stands for Trap-Neuter-Return) that we have implemented would be impossible because they are practically the ones who carry it out, so we have no choice but to support them. We are here celebrating their tenth anniversary with them and we hope there will be many more to come because they do a great job”, said the councillor.

This group dedicated to the protection of feral cats has grown significantly in recent years, both in terms of the number of people involved and its objectives. “At first, we were only dedicated to birth control in stray cat colonies, which are now called community colonies, but as the association has grown, we also help lost or abandoned cats, find them homes or try to put them up for adoption, and capture cats that have been injured, for example, to treat and neuter them”, said the president.
