The work will be carried out by a joint venture with a budget of 4.1 million euros and will to be completed by the end of the year

Last week, the Mijas Town Hall took a definitive step towards making the continuation of the Coastal Path to Fuengirola a reality, after three years of administrative procedures, as the first tender process received no bids and the company awarded the contract for the second tender declined the work. The councillor responsible for Procurement and Infrastructures and Works, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), stated, on Friday 16th, that "this week" the contract has been signed: "We have already awarded the contract to the joint venture that will carry out this section of the path, which is more than five kilometres long, with a budget of approximately 4,100,000 euros (including VAT)".

Now, added the councillor, it is time to draw up the certificate of commencement and begin gathering materials, mainly wood. Torres Trella clarified that these will be the "first tasks" to be carried out by the joint venture formed by the companies Sardalla Española and Herysan 2007. "Then, in mid-summer, around August, they will start to lay the wood on the coastal path", explained the councillor, adding that this section of the path will run parallel to the motorway, meaning that the beach area will not be affected by the work, which will be carried out with minimal disruption to beachgoers and tourists.

These works will complete this section of the path, with 2.3 kilometres still pending tender. Specifically, this contract covers to two sub-sections of the route linking La Cala with Fuengirola: one connecting La Cala with the El Sheriff beach bar and the other connecting the El Faro restaurant with Fuengirola. The sub-section linking the two remains pending and, according to the councillor, is awaiting sectoral reports. "There is an intermediate area for which the project is still with the DPH (Public Water Authority) because there is some complexity with the beach line", said Torres Trella, who nevertheless pointed out that this sub-section between the El Sheriff beach bar and the El Faro restaurant already has pedestrian access, so the continuity of the path is guaranteed.

The execution period is six months from the signing of the contract, so by the end of the year, the residents of Mijas will be able to enjoy this new section of the path to walk or cycle along the Mijas coastline.

The project includes a wooden pedestrian walkway with a clear width of three metres, as well as the identification of the services affected, birdwatching points, rest areas and other elements included in the section between La Cala de Mijas and Fuengirola. It will have the same aesthetic as the section of the Coastal Path that already links La Cala with Marbella.
