Families, celebrations and Eurovision this weekend in Mijas

  • The agenda is complemented by other events such as sports and solidarity
  • ¡Gran fiesta en el parque Andalucía para apoyar a Melody!

The International Day of Families, which was celebrated on the 15th, will also be marked on Saturday and Sunday with an extensive programme of activities

If there is one thing that is highly valued in Mijas, it is family. Although the International Day of Families was officially celebrated last Thursday 15th, the Town Hall has gone all out to ensure that the commemoration continues with vigour and joy throughout this weekend. Thus, Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th May will be the big days, with a range of activities designed for families to share quality time, laughter and experiences. As the mayoress, Ana Mata (PP), said, the aim is to offer "a varied programme so that families in Mijas can enjoy their day".

Events to mark the International Day of Families

This year, this celebration is being experienced intensely in our town, with the festivities being extended so that the weekend is a real marathon of activities for young and old to enjoy together.

On Saturday 17th, the family activities start early: at 10:00 hours, the Road Safety Park, on Calle Ciprés de Las Lagunas, will host a Road Safety Workshop (registration at transportesmijas.es or on site). At the same time, the María Zambrano park in Las Lagunas will host the 'Healthy Family' event, with conscious physical training for all ages.

A little later, at 10:30 hours, there are two options: at the Torreón de La Cala, UP professor Rosa Martín will give a tai chi session for families; and from the Town Hall Square in Mijas Pueblo, the 'Family Challenge' treasure hunt will set off (to take part, you must register at participa@mijas.es).

Eurovision

Also on Saturday 17th, at 19:30 hours, the Andalucía park will be transformed into a small Eurovision stadium. As part of the celebrations for the International Day of Families, the 'Mijas con Eurovisión' event has been scheduled, which will feature a giant screen and live music to support the Spain's representative and Mijas neighbour, Melody.

And the next day...

On Sunday 18th, the fun continues: at 10 hours, a hiking trip along the Fuengirola-Gomenaro river will depart from Avenida de Andalucía, opposite the La Vega industrial estate. Don't forget your hat and water!

At the same time, in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña in Mijas Pueblo, there will be a 'Sport in the Street' session with flamenco fitness and zumba.

And back at the Torreón de La Cala, at 10:30 hours, there will be a family yoga session with instructor Beatriz Mariscal, followed at 12:00 hours by a 'Family Survival Skills' workshop led by Lucas Bushcraft. A non-stop event to celebrate family unity in true Mijas style!

More events

But the weekend's agenda doesn't end there, as Mijas residents don't live on family activities alone, and the town is buzzing with many other events. Take note, we're still going!

As a prelude to all this family fun, don't forget that on Friday 16th, from 17 to 19:30 hours, the María Zambrano Park will host the Gratiferia, an ideal space for exchanging and giving a second life to objects in a community atmosphere. Organised by AV Sector 31 and the group 'Me lo quedo. Hoy por ti, mañana por mí', this is a great initiative where you can leave what you don't use and take what you need, all for free!

This weekend, the tradition of the Cruces de Mayo (May Crosses) is still very much alive, and the residents of El Juncal will celebrate their festival on Saturday 17th in El Abuelo Park from 13 hours, with paella, buñuelos (fritters) and a performance by the Santiago choir (members 5 euros, non-members 10 euros).

On the same day, from 11 hours, the Cortijo Don Elías will be the venue for the 3rd Cruz de Mayo Festival organised by the Mijas Music and Culture Association.

Culture

On Saturday 17th, the Manuel España Theatre has a double session (14 hours and 18 hours) with the end-of-year show by the Stagecoach Theatre Academy, which will present excerpts in English from great West End musicals (tickets 12 euros, at the box office from two hours before the show).

Solidarity

Solidarity also has its place with the 10th Anniversary of Mijas Felina, which will be celebrated on Sunday 18th from 10 to 15 hours in the La Cala Branch Office Square, with dancing, tapas and sweets to support the work of this association.
