The mayoresses of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), Torremolinos, Margarita del Cid, and Ronda, María de la Paz Fernández Lobato, led “Ellas gobiernan. Ciudades en transformación” (Women in government. Cities in transformation), a forum held on Wednesday 14th at CIOMijas where they discussed urban regeneration, quality tourism and the city model of the future.

Mijas thus inaugurated this series of round tables organised by the media outlet Artículo 14, with the aim of creating a forum to discuss the future of the main cities governed by women and to learn about the local strategies and city models promoted by their mayoresses, who, according to the event’s presenter, are credited with “greater organisational skills and empathy than their male counterparts”.
The Mijas of the future
Ana Mata, who hosted the event, said that “the city model that needs to be implemented in Mijas is one that is compatible with the people who live here, who want to grow in Mijas, that doesn’t force anyone to leave, a place where you can raise your children and find employment, a model that is also compatible with tourism, the kind of tourism that have a second home here”.

For the mayoress of Mijas, it is also important that the Mijas of the future is built on pillars of respect for the environment, that promote accessibility and are centered on people, “a sustainable model, a model where accessibility is feasible, as it is necessary, and where green spaces and sports facilities are developed so that children and families can share moments together. As I always say a Mijas with soul, that Mijas that we people undoubtedly seek, with a model based on people and their needs”.
Equality, a fundamental pillar
All three mayoresses, those of Mijas, Torremolinos and Ronda, highlighted the importance of the tourism sector for their towns and the need to always work to defend equality. This was emphasised by Margarita del Cid, who stressed that, “without hesitation and without shame, equality, diversity and freedom must always be the beacons that guide our public action as a government. We are half of society and we must claim our space in all areas of society, while also ensuring that this is always respected”.
Connection between administrations
The three mayoresses also highlighted the importance of establishing relationships with other administrations, institutions and entities in order to achieve changes that will bring about a positive transformation of the city. In this regard, María de la Paz Fernández Lobato said she felt “proud to share the table with them, to present our vision of a city. Obviously, there are significant differences between the municipalities of the Costa del Sol and those inland, but, in the end, we are women who govern, women who implement the policies needed to transform our cities”.
