The Mijas Town Hall invites us to visit its May Cross in the Patio de las Fuentes

  • The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata, and the parish priest, Hermán Marcel, emphasise that it is a symbol of "joy and hope"
  • A la inauguración de la cruz asistieron representantes del equipo de gobierno y de distintas hermandades y grupos parroquiales, además de la Banda de Música de Mijas.

It is the first time that the Town Hall joins this popular festivity with this symbol made by the municipal workers with white carnations

The Patio de las Fuentes of the Mijas Town Hall is dressed for spring, just like many patios at this time of year. For the first time, the Town Hall has decided to install its own May Cross, made entirely of white carnations, accompanied by flower pots that add colourful flowers to the composition and in the background, the typical Andalusian patio fountain that stands in this space. "I think we have a beautiful space thanks to the architecture of the Town Halll, which is quite unique, so we wanted to make the most of this Andalusian patio and place our own May Cross here", said the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), during the blessing of the cross on Monday. Mata recalled that "it has a purpose: to maintain hope that everything will get better and to share some time with our neighbours, as well as having the opportunity to talk about issues that concern us, but also those that make us happy and to share those experiences".

  • Por primera vez, el Ayuntamiento ha querido instalar su propia Cruz de Mayo, elaborada completamente por claveles blancos.

The inauguration of the cross was attended by representatives of the government team and the different brotherhoods and parish groups of the town, as well as the Mijas Music Band. The parish priest of Mijas, Hermán Marcel, after the blessing, thanked the Mijas Town Hall for this gesture and highlighted the symbolism of this display. "In a world where it seems that religious symbols are disappearing, the Mijas Town Hall invites you to take part in this act in front of the May Cross, and that satisfies me, fills me with joy and hope: knowing that we cannot lose our Christian identity and our cultural identity", he said, adding that "because our people have known how to translate it, that theology: by decorating the cross with coloured flowers, singing, playing, dancing and gathering around the cross to celebrate life".

  • Todos los asistentes coincidieron en que se trata de una tradición, una manifestación popular que se está recuperando.

A popular display of faith and joy

All attendees agreed that it is a tradition, a popular demonstration that is being revived, and more and more social, parish, and institutional groups are setting up crosses again. "Both in the brotherhoods and here in the Town Hall, there also had to be a May Cross because it represents hope and faith", emphasised María de la Peña Leiva, the announcer of the Mijas Holy Week and the president of the Santo Entierro. "We encourage the neighbours of Mijas to visit the cross here at the Town Hall and the ones at the different points throughout the municipality", said Iván Plaza, from the Brotherhood of the Cristo de la Paz. "It’s a way of reviving what was once done across the municipality, and I think it’s very beautiful", said Javier Martín, the president of the Brotherhood of Dulce Nombre de Jesús.

  • La cruz permanecerá en el Patio de las Fuentes del Ayuntamiento, expuesta para todos aquellos que quieran acercarse a verla.

The cross will remain on display in the Patio de las Fuentes at the Town Hall, available for all those who wish to come and see it. "Everyone who lives in Mijas, as well as those who visit from outside, are invited", concluded the mayoress of Mijas.
