Yesterday was a historic day for almost all of Spain and part of Portugal, due to a widespread blackout, referred to as a 'cero energético'. This energy blackout kept the entire population on edge for hours, without communications, without electricity and without water in many places for reasons that have not yet been specified, also forcing many businesses and companies to temporarily halt their activity. As the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, explained on Monday night, at 12:33 hours on Monday, 60 percent of the energy supply that covered demand suddenly disappeared. He also indicated that eight communities had asked the central government to take control of the emergency: Andalusia, Galicia, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Extremadura, Valencia, Murcia and La Rioja.
At 6:00 hours on Tuesday, the electricity operator in Spain 'Red Eléctrica' announced that 99 percent of the country’s electricity had been restored. Here in Mijas, some areas of Las Lagunas had power back by 19:00 hours, while others such as Lagarejo and Campo Mijas remained without electricity until well into the early hours of the morning. In Osunillas, power returned at around 19:00 hours, but Mijas Pueblo stayed in the dark until late in the evening. We have received information that in areas of La Cala power restored at 4:00 hours and Calahonda by 6.00 hours.
Educational centres
Given that Level 3 of the Territorial Emergency Plan remains active in Andalusia, and in line with instructions from the Spanish Government, educational centres across the region remain open but without teaching activity. With regard to the complementary meal services, which may be affected, these will only be provided where safety conditions allow.
Malaga Cercanías
The Malaga Cercanías trains remain out of service on Tuesday due to the major blackout and the lack of voltage. Renfe has stated it does not yet know when the lines to Fuengirola and Álora will be restored.
Information about what happened
The lack of connectivity prevented us at Mijas Comunicación from informing you in real time about what was happening in the municipality. However, the Mijas Town Hall deployed an extensive operation involving police officers, Civil Protection volunteers, and other personnel to respond to any incidents. While normality is gradually returning, the Mijas Town Hall continues to recommend limiting travel and relying on official sources for updated information.
At 11:30 hours, 'Mijas Hoy' will broadcast a special informative programme, in Spanish, from key locations in the municipality, which today will be the focus of attention, such as shops and schools among others, also speaking with municipal authorities and members of the Local Police, Fire Department and Civil Protection.
