Unforgettable Passion Week in Mijas

The Passion of Christ, the final days of his life, his suffering, death, and resurrection, were commemorated with various liturgical and brotherhood events

April 13th, Palm Sunday, marked the start of Passion Week with the blessing of palm trees and Mass held in the three urban centers and Calahonda, where Mass was also celebrated in English. The processions also began with the one of La Pollinica in Mijas Pueblo, which represents the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.

Holy Tuesday

Holy Tuesday was led by Nuestro Padre Jesús de Medinaceli, who went out in procession through Las Lagunas. This image represents the evangelical moment in which Jesus, once judged and presented to the people, waits to be given the cross to carry it on his shoulders to Mount Calvary.

Holy Wednesday

The Cristo de la Columna (Christ of the Colum)  made its way through the whitewashed streets of Mijas Pueblo, making Holy Wednesday one of the most significant days for the Mijeños. The image represents the flagellation of Jesus, symbolizing his physical suffering and his humble acceptance of the unjust punishment as part of his sacrifice for the salvation of the world.

Maundy Thursday

After the Mass held on the afternoon of Maundy Thursday at the Church of the Inmaculada Concepción, officiated by the parish priest, Hermán Marcel Lunar, the Archbrotherhood of the Dulce Nombre Jesus Nazareno began its procession, which represents Jesus carrying the cross to Calvary and the pain of his mother.

In Las Lagunas, after Mass officiated by Parish Priest Manuel Jiménez at the Church of San Manuel González, parishioners and neighbours joined the Stations of the Cross to relive the final moments of the Passion of Christ, from the Praetorium of Pilate, his crucifixion, and burial. The parish priest of Las Lagunas read the 14 stations. The history of the Stations of the Cross in Las Lagunas dates back to 1980, when a group of locals decided to stage the Stations of the Cross from the Parish of San José in Fuengirola to the Mijas Plaza in Las Lagunas. In 1985, with the founding of the Brotherhood of Jesus Vivo y Nuestra Señora de la Paz, a more elaborate representation with 14 stations was established, traveling through the streets of Las Lagunas and culminating at the Parish of San Manuel González. Today, the brotherhood, which later incorporated Nuestra Señora de la Piedad, has many parishioners and amateur actors who bring to life biblical figures like Jesus, Pilate, the pious women, Veronica, and Mary. The participation of the neighbours is essential in this event.

In La Cala, after the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, a Holy Hour was held.

Good Friday

Good Friday is always one of the high points of Holy Week in Mijas Pueblo. The procession of the Cristo de la Paz (Christ of peace) is the most representative and profound commemoration of Christianity, recalling the crucifixion and death of Jesus of Nazareth. At 19 hours, the float with the three main figures of the Brotherhood of the Santísimo Cristo de la Paz, María Santísima de la Soledad y San Juan Evangelista left the Parish of the Inmaculada Concepción and began its usual route with the ringing of the bell of honour by the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP). At 21 hours one of the most respectful moments of Holy Week in Mijas took place, the float of the Santo Sepulcro (Holy Sepulchre) came out before the was enclosed, so neighbours and visitors enjoyed the two floats in the street at the same time. In fact, they practically crossed paths with each other in the crowded Plaza de la Constitución.

Good Friday was also a big night in La Cala de Mijas with the procession of the main figures of the parish of Santa Teresa, Cristo Crucificado y María Santísima de los Dolores (Crucified Christ and Mary Most Holy of Sorrows). The floats left at 21 hours from their brotherhood house, accompanied by the Band of Cornets and Drums El Burgo. The meeting between the two floats, at the end of the evening, put the finishing touch to the penance station of the brothers of La Cala.

Four hours of procession, mourning, respect, solemnity, unity, piety, and peace in Las Lagunas. This was Good Friday in the area. At the appointed time, the doors of the Brotherhood house of Jesus Vivo, Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Nuestra Señora de la Piedad opened to let the guiding cross out,  which announced the start of the procession. The Christ of the Union, accompanied by Our Lady of Piety, went outside. The Musical Group of Las Lagunas waited for them playing the Spanish National Anthem. Behind them, the float of Our Lady of Peace, dressed in mourning and carried by the rest of the bearers. This procession represents the passion, death, and suffering of Jesus Christ, but also the compassion of the Virgin Mary as she witnesses the pain of her son on the cross.

Easter Sunday

On Easter Sunday, Mijas was once again dressed in faith and devotion, but also in festivity and hope on the occasion of Easter Sunday, with which Holy Week comes to an end. As is tradition, a procession took place in Mijas Pueblo after mass. Two floats went out in procession: the big one and the ‘chico’, the small one. Children and adults participated in the procession, accompanied by sacred song, bells and the sound of the Mijas Music Band.
