The agreement has been reached after the meeting between the president of the supra-municipal institution, Francisco Salado, and the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata

The Diputación de Málaga (Malaga Provincial Council) will allocate 350,000 euros to complete the works on the building of the Association of Relatives and People with Mental Illness of the Costa del Sol (Afesol) in Mijas. The agreement was reached after a meeting between the president of the supra-municipal institution, Francisco Salado, and the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP). Both have discussed the projects that are currently being promoted in the municipality. The Mijas Town Hall, the Junta de Andalucía, the ‘la Caixa’ Foundation and the association itself have also participated in the financing of the work, which amounts to 1.4 million euros.

Salado highlighted the "invaluable social work" carried out by Afesol and explained that this centre will provide assistance to people from all over the Costa del Sol, Malaga city and the Guadalhorce area. "Third sector organisations such as this association play an essential role in the province in offering better care to particularly vulnerable groups, such as people suffering from mental illness", said the president.

The mayoress of Mijas, for her part, stated that "one of my priorities is to strengthen ties with the different administrations" and, in this sense, she thanked the president of the Provincial Council for his involvement in "such an important project for our municipality as is the new headquarters of Afesol, an organisation that carries out laudable work for mental health in Mijas". "The welfare of my neighbours is a priority and collaboration with the associative network is key to this", she said.

Assistance

In this building, temporary housing will be provided for people with mental health problems who are being monitored by the Mental Health Unit, based on the following objectives: promotion of personal autonomy, so as to work on the recovery of adequate psychosocial functioning with a view to a future model of autonomous living; interventions in situations of crisis or psychological distress, providing a safe space and avoiding, as far as possible, hospital admission; prevention of suicide, which according to WHO data is the biggest public health problem in Europe, and care for women with mental illness who are victims of gender violence.

Access, therefore, will be subject to a health indication, from the Mental Health services of the Andalusian Public Health System, as well as a social indication from the community social services, establishing an inter-sectorial coordination (socio-medical).

Located on Camino de Campanales in Las Lagunas, it will have nine places and a day centre, with 24-hour staff presence and variable support adapted to the needs of each person. Afesol hopes to finish the works by the end of the year to be able to start operating in 2026.

Features of the building

On the ground floor you will find the main pedestrian access, entrance hall, two offices, kitchen integrated with the dining room and living room, toilet, larder and storeroom. This is also where the road access is located. On the first floor there is the hallway in two wings, nine bedrooms with nine individual bathrooms and the storeroom.

On the roof floor there will be the entrance hall with utility room and the roof, while in the basement there will be six parking spaces, three storerooms, laundry and utility rooms.

The three floors (except for the roof) are connected by a nucleus of two flights of stairs and a lift, and the outdoor area will have a back patio, part of which will be covered by a pergola. Each person using the centre will have their own individual room, equipped with a bathroom and suitable furniture.
