In Mijas Natural, they show us how a woman should wear a mantilla in a procession as it obeys a strict protocol

In recent years, it has become more and more common to see young women wearing mantillas in Holy Week processions. Some of them have inherited these accessories from their mothers or grandmothers, belong to a brotherhood and share the enthusiasm of accompanying their patron saints as a sign of devotion.

  • Esperanza Porras, mijeña y hermana del Santo Entierro, fue la modelo elegida para explicar cómo debe ser, según el protocolo cofrade, el aspecto de una mujer de mantilla.

Any woman over the age of 18 can wear a mantilla. "As it is a day of mourning, you should go in harmony, with a dress below the knee, covered shoulders and with a discrete neckline. It should be a fairly simple outfit, thin black tights with no pattern and shoes of the same colour", explains one of the owners and stylist of Mijas Natural, Mari Ángeles Márquez.

  • Las mujeres de mantilla deben llevar vestido negro por debajo de la rodilla con los hombros cubiertos y sin mucho escote.

Esperanza Porras, from Mijas and sister of the Santo Entierro, was the model chosen to explain how, according to protocol, a woman in a mantilla should look. "For me it is an honour to participate with my brotherhood in something that represents the town. It's my first time and I'm very excited", she said. The stylist of Mijas Natural, Raquel Ortiz, explained the accessories for the ocassion, "Esperanza wears black gloves, black pins to hold the mantilla, the brooch that goes right behind it, a rosary in her hand, sober earrings and, normally, you also wear the medal of the brotherhood".

  • Poner la mantilla sigue un curioso ritual que mide los picos y pliegues para que caiga bien.

As for the hairstyle, Mari Ángeles Márquez continued, "the hair should be away from the face; it has to be comfortable and firm so that the ornamental comb stays in place". The make-up, said Raquel, "has to be equally sober, without strong colours, so that she looks pretty but without  standing out too much”.
