Mijas shows its commitment to health with a day full of activities

  • AFA, Apaffer, Adimi, Red Cross, Lions Club, the Malaga Veterinary Association, the Tuna Femenina de Medicina and 4 All Fitness Gym collaborated
  • La jornada estaba dedicada a la familia.

The area of Health and Consumer Affairs organised ‘Mijas with your wellbeing’ on the occasion of World Health Day, which was celebrated Monday 7th of April

Health is not only the absence of disease, it is balance, prevention, fair access and awareness, and this was demonstrated by the Health and Consumer Affairs Department of the Mijas Town Hall with the day ‘Mijas with your wellbeing’. The programme of workshops, games and activities took place on the morning of Sunday 7th in the Plaza de El Torreón in La Cala, on the occasion of World Health Day, which is commemorated every 7th of April. "We have done many participatory workshops for children and parents, where we talked about health, from sleep hygiene to the well-being of the body", explained the councillor of Health, Marco Cortés (PP).

The first edition of this event featured numerous workshops and activities, including a walk along the Coastal Path, a chair yoga practice led by UP yoga teacher Raquel González, as well as games for the whole family. "It's very entertaining because there are many different workshops, you can fill in your passport and they give you a T-shirt when you finish and you have more than six", said Jésica Puig, a resident of Las Lagunas who attended the day with her family.

Collaboration of groups

Numerous entities such as AFA Mijas, Apaffer and Adimi collaborated in the event. "We brought a sample of the things we do in our workshops, mainly wood and ceramics, details that we make for all kinds of celebrations: from candles, bookmarks, carpets, etc... For us, events like this are very important for two reasons: to raise funds with our products and to give visibility to our association and our users", highlighted Antonio Ruiz, a worker at the association. The Finnish organisation Fida International was also present, "we are going to show people what smoking a pack of cigarettes a day does in a year, and also how bad vapers and hookahs are", explained Ruth Lobos, a member of the association.

The Red Cross, for its part, was in charge of taking the blood pressure of the attendees, while the La Cala Lions Club carried out diabetes tests, as they do the last Wednesday and Saturday of each month in La Cala, "sometimes we find people who have quite a high blood pressure and we recommend that they visit their GP or go to the hospital immediately", said Mercy Chapman, from the Lions Club.

"Thank you very much to all the associations for their participation. I would like to emphasise the importance of health. Our wellbeing is the most precious thing we have and it is important to take care of ourselves. That is why the Mijas Town Hall wanted to highlight this day, which has never been celebrated before. This first edition will not be the last one, as it has been very well received, the truth is that it has been a success", concluded the councillor for Health and Consumer Affairs, Marco Cortés.
