The Town Hall implements a plan for the deployment of Fibre Optic in Mijas Pueblo

  • This project will allow fibre to reach 90% of this population centre, currently only 45% is covered
  • El concejal de Infraestructuras y Obras y de Modernización Digital, Juan José Torres Trella en calle Carril, una de las zonas por la que se desplegará la fibra óptica.

The local executive expects it to be ready by the end of May, benefiting streets such as Campos, Larga del Palmar, Caños and Vistamar.

After years of waiting, fibre optic is finally being deployed in Mijas Pueblo. The Town Hall assures that, since January 2024, after the announcement of the closure of the copper stations determined by the European Union, they are working to be able to offer this service, which has required permits from the Ministry of Culture of the Junta de Andalucía, as it affects the historic centre, and to comply with certain guidelines when carrying out the rollout, such as the wiring being underground or in the colour of the facades, if it could not be hidden, and never overhead. This was explained by the councillor for Infrastructures and Works and Digital Modernisation, Juan José Torres Trella (PP), who said that Telefónica was the only national operator to present a deployment plan after the Mijas Town Hall put it out to tender, and “this deployment plan, after being reviewed by the Town Hall, had to go back to Culture and was approved last month, which means that they are already carrying out the layout of the installation to make the fibre optic cable runs in the village”.

  • Este plan permitirá, en unos casos, la eliminación de cables en las fachadas, en otros, que la tirada sea del color de la fachada.

Telefónica will use the underground conduit that already exists in the town thanks, said the councillor, to the rectification of “another problem”, because “the previous government team made a fibre optic agreement with local operators, in which, in order to use the conduits of the municipality, it was necessary to pay a series of fees and benefits for the Town Hall, of about 10. 10,000 per year”, explained Torres Trella, who added that it was “a fee that the operators refused to pay because according to the Local Finance Law, they were already paying 1.5% of their turnover in the municipality”. The councillor stressed that “from this government team, we have eliminated the agreement so that any operator can use the underground telecommunications conduits that we, as works are being carried out, are placing in the municipality”.

  • Estas medidas permitirán que la distribución de fibra óptica, que actualmente es de un 45% en el núcleo, llegue a más del 90%.

These measures will allow fibre optic distribution, which currently stands at 45% in the centre, to reach more than 90%, a step that the citizens were demanding. “Many neighbours, simply for leisure or work needs, demand it. Internet nowadays is essential , not only for  neighbours, but also for those who work remotely, for anyone who comes from outside and wants to live here and work from home”, concluded the councillor.

The streets Campos, Larga del Palmar, Caños, Vistamar, Carril, Alegre, Olivo, Casas Nuevas and Plaza La Libertad among others will be some of the many areas where the fibre optic will be deployed and which will enter into service, they assure, at the end of May.
