On Saturday, the event ‘Letras solidarias’ brought together twelve groups at the Cortijo Don Elías, all of them with the same goal: to raise funds to help a neighbour at risk of social exclusion. The Department of Culture promoted this event together with the new association Sembrando Sonrisas.
The meeting took place as planned, as the rain gave a respite that day, and with activities for all tastes, from games and face painting for the little ones, to a good lunch and live performances, among others. In addition, the event has the involvement of up to twelve cultural and neighbourhood associations of the municipality, "I would like to thank them for their participation, because all of them have made possible for this event, based on literature and coinciding with the commemoration of World Poetry Day, to also have a charitable purpose, through the association Sembrando Sonrisas", said the councillor for Culture in the Mijas Town Council, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP).
Literature also played a special role during the day, hence the title of the event, 'Letras solidarias' (Solidarity Letters). Local authors from the Asociación Cultural Amigos de la Literatura participated by offering reading workshops and exhibiting their books to the public, "also donating part of the sales of our books to this association and collaborating with a poetry recital, because our objective, as well as being present in this humanitarian work, is also to bring literature closer to the municipality of Mijas", said Germán Diogracia, vice president of this collective.
"Letters, literature, music, fun and games have come together for a single purpose, to help Amalia Campos", said the president of Sembrando Sonrisas, Rosa Planelles, who also took the opportunity to inform that "in addition to the money we collect today, we have also made available the phone number 617 744 374 for all those who want to collaborate by making a donation through bizum”.
Regarding this gesture of solidarity, Amalia Campos herself, who is not going through her best economic times, said she was "very grateful to all the people who are helping us, I really don't have words and I can't show my gratitude for everything they are doing for us".
Other projects underway
In addition to this event, the association Sembrando Sonrisas is also currently involved in helping unemployed women over 50 years of age, through different online training activities, "and at the moment we are also helping three children from Mijas with rare diseases who need resources for their therapies", summarised Planelles.
