Urban art to rediscover public spaces

  • This is the basis of the Landscape Intervention workshop led by the artist D. Darko

This is the second course in the free cycle, organised by the Culture Department, which includes three urban intervention workshops and three in nature

Creativity and art came together in the second of six workshops organised by the renowned artist Manuel Díaz Villalba, known as D. Darko, as part of his artistic intervention projects in urban and natural landscapes organised by the Culture Department. This workshop, which was free and attended by local neighbours, once again demonstrated how art can transform and revitalise everyday spaces.

With 15 participants of different ages, including children and families, the activity focused on intervening the patio of the Cultural Centre and its surroundings, such as the park in front of the San Valentín passageway in Las Lagunas. Using techniques such as stencils and aerosols, the participants decorated architectural elements such as benches, litter bins and fountains with figures of fish, birds and cats, filling the environment with life and colour.

For Viviana Díaz, one of the perticipants, the experience has been inspiring. "Since I arrived in Mijas, I have done nothing but pursue art in its many forms. This workshop has allowed me to explore a new facet and I have been fascinated by working with spray paint, something I had never done before", she said excitedly, also highlighting the generosity and creativity of D. Darko.

The workshop was not only a meeting to learn and experiment with art, but also an opportunity to create community. Esteban Lafuente, another of the participants, stressed the importance of this type of activities to encourage coexistence and creativity in the family. "I came with my daughters and my wife, and it was a fantastic way to spend the day together developing our creativity", he said.

D. Darko himself explained that his workshops are based on "seeing spaces in a new light and intervening them in an ephemeral way, making the environment more attractive and stimulating for those who pass through it". The artist's career ranges from murals in galleries to individual actions in public spaces, with a focus on transforming the urban and natural experience through art.

D. Darko also reflected on the fine line between art and vandalism, underlining the need for spaces available for artistic expression. "Just as we have parks and sports fields, we need places where young people can explore their creativity. It is essential for human developmen", he said.

An open invitation

The series includes three urban intervention workshops and three in natural environments. D. Darko encourages the whole community to participate: "It's a great opportunity to develop your creativity, connect with the public space and learn techniques such as stencils or aerosols. Plus, they are free of charge.
