Mijas, "pioneer" on the Costa del Sol in the management of cat colonies

  • El contrato contempla también la realización de campañas informativas sobre la gestión de las colonias.

The Town Hall will allocate 112,000 euros each year to establish a control service that “optimises” the Trap-Neuter-Return protocol

Law 7/2023, of March 28th, on the protection of the rights and welfare of animals, in relation to the colonies of stray cats, establishes that the management of these colonies, consisting of the capture and health control of these animals, their neutering, identification and return to their colony of origin, is a municipal competence. For this reason, the Mijas Town Hall has just awarded the contract for the management of the colonies, for which it will invest a total of 112,771.43 euros per year. But the Mijas Town Hall, says the councillor for Animal Welfare, Marco Cortés (PP), “goes a step further” and has established in the contract that the successful bidder must geo-reference the existing colonies in the municipality, as well as carry out the assessment of the location, guidelines for the preparation of the location and the training of volunteers from the associations for the proper management of the colonies. To this end, a report on each colony must be drawn up, containing details of the colony, as well as directing and coordinating with the volunteers and collaborators, the capture and transfer of the cats belonging to the group to be controlled and their return to the colony, the so-called TNR protocol (trap, neuter, return).

It is, according to the councillor, “a comprehensive management, which makes Mijas a pioneer on the Costa del Sol” in this regard.

  • El edil de Bienestar Animal, Marco Cortés asegura que Mijas “da un paso más allá” con esta gestión integral en el cuidado de los gatos.

A professional process

The concessionaire will also be responsible for the neutering, internal and external deworming, ear tagging, identification by microchip and vaccination (anti-rabies and trivalent) of the animals that are captured before being returned to the place of origin. “This also means that we are going to go further and include in the tender a special vaccine to provide a solution to a respiratory disease, a very common problem in all cats, always bearing in mind the welfare of the animal; we felt it appropriate to include this in the tender”.
