On Monday 3rd of March, healthcare activity began in the new extension building of the Hospital Universitario Costa del Sol (HUCS), where several care units have been relocated. The new facilities house outpatient consultations, rehabilitation, extractions, the medical and oncohaematology day hospitals, the external dispensing of medicines and the areas of Admissions and Attention to Citizens. Therefore, patients who need to be attended to by these services will have to enter through the main door of these new hospital facilities.
The rest of the healthcare activity will continue to be carried out, as before, in the old building, so access will continue to be through the entrance next to the public cafeteria and the Emergency Department. The Regional Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs informed that throughout March, new relocation phases to move other areas and services from the old building to the new one will be carried out, with healthcare activity beginning in the coming weeks in the new facilities of the Surgical Block and Major Outpatient Surgery (CMA). However, information will be provided as and when the transfers take place.

After freeing up space in the old hospital facilities, this space will be remodelled by enlarging the emergency room, delivery and hospitalisation areas, among others, and renovating the outpatient area.
Expansion project
The expansion project of the Costa del Sol Hospital involves the construction of two new buildings: the hospital building, which is now starting its activity, and another administrative building, the glazed one, which has been operational since 2023. These buildings together will increase the constructed surface area by nearly 39,000 m². In addition, 7,000 m² of the old building will also be renovated, mainly for hospital and critical processes. The total area of the three buildings is 90,426.78 m².
The work is being carried out in phases. The first phase ended in 2023 with the administrative building coming into operation; the second phase is the current one, in which the new hospital building starts operating and the third phase will entail the refurbishment of the old hospital, which will be used mainly for hospital processes, emergency, ICU, hospital pharmacy and laboratory. According to the same sources, 95% of the work on the three buildings is currently completed.
