It is one of the ten flags in the province of Malaga awarded by the Junta de Andalucía and the Diputación

On Friday 21st the Andalusian Flags awarded by the Junta de Andalucía and the Malaga Provincial Council were presented in Malaga as part of the commemoration of 28F (Andalusia Day). The ceremony was held in the Edgar Neville Auditorium. Among the list of award winners was the researcher Carlos Huesa Berral. The young man, according to the organisers of these awards, "is an example of the innovative and committed Malaga, who with his effort, training and determination can help save lives". These characteristics made him worthy of the Andalusian Flag for Research, Science and Health. Before collecting the award at the official ceremony, the award winners met with the press. During his speech, Huesa Berral said about the award that "you can't believe it, that in your homeland they are proud of you and acknowledge you. It is a tremendous pride, but also a great responsibility".

Huesa also pointed out more relevant aspects of this recognition for him: "For me, the importance of this distinction lies in two things: first, I would like it to be a platform to raise awareness in society of the importance of investing in research. Secondly, I would like to act as a bridge between the place where I am, there in Boston, and the people back home in Malaga".

Fight against cancer

Huesa Berral, a 30-year-old whose father is from Malaga and mother from Mijas, is currently working on a project with the American Cancer Society focusing on liver tumours based on radioembolisation, an alternative to the only curative option currently available, surgery. "Right now this treatment is not very optimised and clinical trials have come out both in Europe and in collaboration with the US, showing that if we are able to optimise this treatment to predict where these microspheres go and try to quantify more precisely the radiation that is received in the tumour and in the healthy tissue. If we are able to do that, for some patients that option will become curative", explained Huesa Berral. The young man was accompanied on Friday by his parents, sister and brother-in-law. His wife and son could not come to Spain to share this moment, although the young man from Malaga returned to Boston a day later to celebrate.

Other awards

In addition to Huesa's award, the Junta de Andalucía and the Malaga Provincial Council also presented nine other Andalusian flags to outstanding individuals and organisations in the province. Among the award winners was the Malaga Press Association, for its work in the defence of accurate information and the fight against disinformation. As its president, Elena Blanco, said, "we are grateful for this acknowledgement, an acknowledgement that we consider to be an appreciation of the importance of journalism in its social function at the present time".
