Thanks to 'Las dos lunas, una historia de amor' (The two moons, a love story), the dramatised route carried out by the students of the Mitur Employment and Training programme, tourists and visitors have been able to discover and rediscover our town in an attractive way, with a different view, focusing on the love story between Estevan Peres, a slave from Mijas, and Juana de Carlos, Sultan from Fez, and set in the 16th century.
Martina Arregui and Rocío Molinero stepped into the shoes of the sultana Amal (Juana de Carlos), and Óscar García and Álvaro Ruiz played the role of Estevan in two different stages of his life. "My character is very activist, a fighter, cultured and advanced woman for her time", said Arregui.
For his part, García explained that his character "was a slave who was not very fortunate", and it was in Fez where he had the opportunity to meet Amal,"‘a young sultana locked up and bound in gold, but who, thanks to her love for Estevan, achieved the longed-for freedom and a full life with him".
However, they were not the only actors in the cast, the rest of the students from the tourism course also participated. They worked on the project for about a month and a half, under the direction of local playwright Manuel España and the support of historian Carlos Gonzalbes Cravioto, to narrate this adventure full of intrigue, clashing cultures and legendary love. "It has been quite a challenge as none of us have ever done acting, but we are grateful to Manuel España because he has helped us a lot and has given us very practical and useful notions", said García.
"Acting has also helped us to loosen up our communication skills, which are essential in the tourism sector", Molinero explained.
Two troubadours were in charge of telling the story in each of the spots, up to a total of nine: hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña, Mirador del Compás, Plaza Virgen de la Peña, Plaza de la Constitución, Paseo de las Dos Lunas, La fortaleza, La Muralla, the Church of the Inmaculada Concepción and the Casa Museo.
It is worth remembering that the route is based on the true story of Juana de Carlos and Estevan Peres, as told in the book ‘La reina de las dos lunas’ (The Queen of the Two Moons) by the writer José Manuel García Marín.
Institutional visit
Accompanying the future guides, the mayoress of the municipality, Ana Mata (PP), and the councillor for Employment Promotion, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), highlighted the work done by the "novice actresses and actors".
"We are fortunate to have young people from Mijas who are making a theatrical representation in the most unique spots we have in the municipality, they have a great talent and a great ability to convey stories as beautiful as the one we have seen today", said Mata.
Maldonado recalled that within the training received by the 15 students of the Mitur project is "the generation of a touristic products" and stressed that "this is an important historical product and that from the Town Hall we appreciate". Maldonado also thanked España "for collaborating in the activity".
