Senior Citizens and Heritage are organising talks and visits to the Cortijo Acebedo site

  • This activity is open to all senior citizens in the municipality
  • Las conferencias tienen como finalidad servir de antesala a una posterior visita guiada al yacimiento.

The Mijas Town Hall will provide buses to facilitate access to the archaeological site

The archaeological legacy of Mijas is invaluable. Proof of this is the Cortijo Acebedo archaeological site and to promote it, the Senior Citizens Department of the Mijas Town Hall, in collaboration with the Historical Heritage Department, has organised a series of visits and talks for the elderly in the municipality. This was announced on Thursday 20th by the councillors for the Senior Citizens, Silvia Marín (PP), and for Historical Heritage, Lourdes Burgos (PP), and the coordinator of the latter department, Desirée Piñero, who explained that this informative activity is free for the elderly of the municipality and tis the first time it has been organised.

Talks

Thus, on the 7th of March a talk will be given at the Centre for Active Participation in Las Lagunas, while on the 18th it will take place in La Cala and on the 21st, in Mijas Pueblo. All of these events will take place at 11:00 hours. As the councillor for Senior Citizens pointed out, "this initiative aims to offer the elderly a social activity of a cultural nature as part of the promotion of active ageing. Meetings in cultural spaces promote social interaction, combating the isolation that often accompanies ageing".

In these talks, the staff of the Heritage department will explain in an entertaining way and adapted to a general public everything that is known so far about this archaeological site, from the time of its discovery to the work that is currently being carried out through a General Research Project. In addition, they will present a brief description of all the findings that have taken place during the course of the different archaeological excavation activities, in chronological order, together with a display of some of the objects found.

Visits to the site

The conferences are a prelude to a subsequent guided tour of the archaeological site, promoting the immersive nature of the proposal. The first of these will be on the 14th of March for the elderly of Las Lagunas, on the 25th of March for those of La Cala and on the 28th for the users of Mijas Pueblo. All of them will take place at 11:00 hours and there will be buses to facilitate the access to the Cortijo Acebedo.

The elderly attending this activity will visit the different areas excavated in the archaeological site following a chronological line that will take them from a cremation necropolis from the Phoenician period, passing through a pottery complex from the Roman period made up of different pottery production kilns, to finish next to the remains of a thermal space or ‘balneum’, also corresponding to the Roman phase.

For the councillor of the Heritage area, "this type of proposal offers multiple benefits for the mental health of our elders and, in addition, we give them the opportunity to know in detail the rich heritage of Mijas, promoting their curiosity and making them participants of the latest discoveries and works carried out". Something that Piñero also highlighted, for whom "active ageing through culture is not only an option, but an opportunity to rediscover life in all its fullness".

In order to take part in these activities it is necessary to register in advance at the different offices of the Senior Citizens Department or by calling 951 062 006, 952 461 549, 649 873 051 or 696 563 189. Places are limited.
