The specialist in film hairstyling, character make up and body paint artist won this award with her collection ‘Mixas’

"My collection, with which I have presented myself for these awards is called ‘Mixas’, it is a tribute to the people who have always welcomed me here, because I have been in Mijas for 35 years and the truth is that I am delighted", explained Luisa Machen to Mijas Comunicación on Wednesday 12th. With this collection the specialist in film hairstyling, character make up and body paint artis won the prize for the Avant-garde Hairdressing Collection, last Saturday at the Fibes Sevilla in Expobelleza (the III Beauty, Health and Wellness Fair). This is the second Picasso award that the aesthetic artist has won, the first one was for make-up for her collection ‘El resurgir del barroco’ (2019), among others, Machen also has a Prize Look award (2017) for creative make-up and a MUA Festival (2019).

Mixas

"The costumes, hairstyles and make-up they wore pay homage to the craftsmanship of Mijas, because Mijas is a town of artisans and artists. So I took inspiration for my entire collection from that", said Machen, who explained that “I tried to make the hairstyles look like esparto grass, so I used braids, and then I used sackcloth and esparto grass for the costumes”. The finishing touch, she said, was "thanks to Lourdes Díaz, the saddler, who told me to take whatever I wanted from her workshop to decorate the models for the Seville catwalk, and thanks to her I was able to give it that touch". "The jury really liked the esparto grass pieces, the little donkey from Mijas and the bull, I also took some jingles from the 'pastorales' because (smiles) Mijas is the cradle of 'pastorales'. I took bits and pieces of things that are very local to Mijas and I iincluded them in my collection", said the prize-winner.

To the rhythm of ACDC

Another original feature of Luisa Machen's collection was the parade, as she said, inspired by the artisan and typical elements of Mijas, accompanied by the music of ACDC, "the public liked it a lot, I think, they applauded a lot and at the end of the parade they came up to me, as well as other colleagues, to congratulate me", she said. The musical selection had something to do with the coordinator of Radio Mijas, Pepe Burgos, "he is brilliant, when I told him what I wanted he said it was his favourite song, so we took the song, cut it and made it our own, more appropriate for the catwalk, and it turned out very well".

Special thanks

In addition to Pepe Burgos, Luisa Machen also wanted to thank the photographer María Márquez for her help, "every time I collaborate with her she takes my make-up and my hairstyles to another level", said the artist, who also added that "she is a magnificent photographer and has supported me in a wonderful way throughout the year it has taken us to create this collection". It has taken four months of work for the headdresses, another two months for the costumes and, on some occasions, even 12-hour photo sessions.

She also thanked her assistant hairdresser, Andrea Arrabal, "she put a lot of effort into making African braids in the hair of the models and the dancer", she said. "It was a team of women, we had a great time in Seville and we were there for 12 hours. The truth is that it was all very good, I'm delighted", admitted Machen. The team that participated in this collection is completed by the models María García, Mariana Isabel Rico and Fátima Sheila Angulo and the dancer Irene Cuevas.
