The Department of the Environment in Mijas has launched a new awareness campaign to prevent the proliferation of wild boars or wild pigs. The councillor responsible for this area, Marco Cortés (PP), spoke on Tuesday 4th about this initiative, insisting that the feeding of these animals has already become a problem, "some people think it is funny or that they are doing good, but it is not", he considered, adding that "feeding wild boars alters their way of life, they get used to going to specific points to eat, getting closer to urban areas. They enter children's playgrounds, gardens, residential areas, even urban centres and roads, and all this is dangerous.
The councillor also recalled that the ordinance on Citizen Safety and Coexistence prohibits the provision of food to animals in public spaces, except for authorised pets. "The local police are already vigilant on this issue and are intensifying surveillance in areas where their presence is detected, and can impose fines of up to 750 euros", said Cortés, while asking the public “to collaborate, to let these animals live in their natural environment and not to attract them to urban centres”.
The arrival of wild boar in residential and urban areas has become a common and frequent occurrence. They come down from rural areas and from the mountains in search of food and water and offering them food in an easy way is a serious problem. The Environment Department reminds us that this poses a risk for everyone: it causes an ecological imbalance, encourages them to move closer to urban areas, modifies their behaviour, promotes their proliferation, transmits diseases and is a danger to public safety.
The head of the Environment also insisted that wild boars and wild pigs do not have the appropriate veterinary checks and can transmit different diseases to people, domestic livestock, hunting dogs or other wildlife.
To disseminate the initiative, an informative video and posts on the municipal social networks (Facebook, X and Instagram) have been published, as well as on the municipal website (www.mijas.es). It will also be disseminated through Mijas Comunicación.
