Despite the campaign launched by the Department for the Environment in Mijas, the Local Police have been forced to fine a neighbour 250 euros for feeding a herd of wild boars.

The councillor for the Environment, Marco Cortés (PP), stressed the importance of complying with the regulations as "article 86 of the Ordinance of Citizen Coexistence prohibits feeding any wild animal. These animals do not pass veterinary checks and can cause many diseases".

The councillor assured that the Town Hall is monitoring the most conflictive areas and the Local Police is watching all these areas to prevent feeding of wild animals. "We are not persecuting, but monitoring these areas to make everyone aware that we should not feed wild animals", added Cortés.

The arrival of wild boars in residential and urban areas has become a serious problem because it causes ecological imbalance, modifies their behaviour, promotes their proliferation and poses a danger to public safety considering that the animals can be aggressive or transmit diseases. 

Awareness campaign

The Mijas Town hall has launched a communication campaign to remind people that nature must take its course and that animals should not be fed.

"Feeding these animals may seem nice, but quite the contrary. The animals leave their natural habitat in search of food and will not return to nature if we provide it in such an accessible way", explained Cortés.

The Mijas Town Hall is determined to act accordingly to protect the ecosystem and the safety of its citizens.
