The Mijas Town Hall, through the Parks and Gardens Department, carried out more than 1,600 actions throughout the municipality in 2024, which can be grouped into different blocks: maintenance, trees, children's areas and pruning. This was detailed by the councillor in charge of this delegation, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), who was very satisfied with the results obtained, and also described some of the most significant actions. "The Parks and Gardens department always works for the good of the community, neighbours and visitors so that they find the municipality in the best possible way", said the councillor.
In terms of improvement and maintenance work, the plumbing team has carried out a total of 187 actions. As for the municipal trees, 540 actions have been carried out, including tree cleaning and pruning. This work, explained the councillor, is essential to guarantee and preserve the health of the trees, and the safety and protection of pedestrians, as "the possibility of falling branches is prevented and at the same time the areas where they are located are embellished". In this regard, the councillort stressed the phytosanitary treatments applied to prevent the processionary moth and red palm weevil, among others.
Gómez Teruel stressed the local government's "commitment" to measures to save water and thus mitigate the effects of the drought, and therefore underlined the commitment to xeriscaping, which is the creation of spaces in which water consumption is reduced without losing ornamentation. To this end, low water use plants and sustainable and recycled artificial ornamental elements are used as ground cover to rationalise the use of water as much as possible and to beautify the municipality. Among the new spaces with this type of gardening, the Town Hall points out, for example, the roundabout at the entrance to Mijas Pueblo and those located in residential areas such as Calazul, Bellavista, next to CEIP El Olmo and Avenida de Mijas.
On the other hand, 156 maintenance actions were undertaken in the children's areas related to cleaning and repairs to the playgrounds to prioritise the well-being of the children.
The Parks and Gardens Department has been responsible for the management and processing of a considerable number of tree pruning and felling files, all of these procedures, explained the municipal area, are carried out under "rigorous standards that ensure responsible administrative management". As a result of these files, 1,939 trees and shrubs have been brought into the municipal garden centre as a compensation measure. The councillor expressed his gratitude to all the municipal workers who keep the parks and gardens in the best possible condition.
