The International Volunteer Day is celebrated on December 5th every year. It started as an international observance mandated by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1985 and is a day where volunteers are acknowledged and the spirit of volunteerism is promoted at the local, national and international levels. Mijas did not want to miss out on this important event, so on Thursday 5th a dozen people and groups were recognised in a ceremony that took place at the Jesús Jaime Mota scenic viewpoint.
The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata, was in charge of presiding over the meeting in which all those recognised in the tribute were present. There she highlighted the essential work of volunteers, as their "generosity and altruism make this world a better place".
"Their work is key to social, environmental and economic transformation. A volunteer is capable of transforming people's mindsets, attitudes and behaviour. Because being a volunteer is one of the greatest exponents of human generosity", explained the mayoress during her speech.
To be specific, the following were acknowledge: Pilar Jaime and María Priego from Mejor en Familia; Inmaculada García and Miguel Ángel Lozano from Nueva Cultura del Desarrollo; Rosa Yolanda from Avates; Antonia Castro from Civil Protection; Manuel Madueño and Ana María Jaime from APAFFER; Reyes Serralvo from the Spanish Association Against Cancer; Silvia Moreno from Círculo de Mujeres Casa Luna; the young volunteers from AFA Mijas; Manuel Aragonés from AFA Mijas-Fuengirola; and the Soroptimist and Red Cross groups.
A special chapter was dedicated to the Local Police and Firefighters from Mijas who travelled to Valencia to help the victims of the DANA, something which the mayoress praised. Maribel Alonso and Álvaro Cerezo were also honoured in this category. A distinction was also awarded to the local Civil Guard. "We all have in our minds the image of villages devastated by heavy rains, of Spaniards who have lost everything and were crying out for help. Well, that's where Mijas was, helping those who needed it most", said the mayoress.
