The Mijas Town Hall, through the Tourism Department, has presented this Monday the IX Route of Solidarity Trees, an activity that seeks to raise funds for the victims of the DANA and which is organised by Caritas in collaboration with the Town Hall. It is an initiative in which businesses, associations, brotherhoods and residents of the municipality participate and which has two objectives: to decorate the streets for Christmas and to raise funds to help people who need it most. "A lot of young people are also taking part because the school children are going to put up a tree in the Plaza de los Siete Caños. Then, in the Forge, there is another tree that a girl has put up with the help of her parents, but she has made all the decorations", explained María Jesús Moreno, a Caritas volunteer.
Those interested in participating just need to get a map at the Tourist Office in Mijas Pueblo with the location of the trees. In addition, the route includes a competition to choose the tree with the most votes by means of a donation of one euro per ballot, which will be donated in its entirety to Caritas. "We want this activity to be a meeting point for families and an example of how, together, we can make a big difference", said the councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox).
The trees will be on display in different parts of the municipality until the 5th of January, inviting Mijeños and visitors to enjoy the route and contribute to this charitable cause. The locations to collect and hand in the ballots are, in addition to the Tourist Office of Mijas Pueblo, the Botello Pharmacy and Calzados Moreno. There will also be a final raffle with prizes for the participants.
During the presentation, the Councillor for Tourism highlighted this proposal by pointing out that "the Route of Solidarity Trees is an example of the solidarity and union of the Mijeños to help those who need it most during this special time".
Caritas has underlined the positive impact of these initiatives, stressing that "in times of difficulty, it is when the generosity of our community is most valued".
All proceeds will go to support families affected by the DANA, thus reinforcing the commitment of both the organisation and the municipality to the most vulnerable, as confirmed by the parish priest of Mijas Pueblo, Hermán Marcel: "This initiative of the Caritas group through these Christmas trees serves to raise awareness of the work that Caritas does; it is an initiative that I think is very very significant".
