The councillor responsible for Economic Development, Commerce and Culture, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), presented on Friday the GastronoMijas initiative, a new municipal programme to boost the business network related to the hotel and catering industry in Mijas. The Town Hall wants to promote the culinary experience in the municipality by discovering places with an essence.

This project brings together three major players in the sector: commer, local producers and CIOMijas catering students under the same idea, to promote gastronomy in Mijas as a feature that boosts the economy and tourism.

According to Maldonado, "the aim of this initiative is to give shape to a reality that already exists in the municipality of Mijas, which is the wide and interesting gastronomic offer. We are going to promote it so that gastronomy becomes another cultural and tourist attraction".

The project was presented at the Andalusian Centre for the Comprehensive Training of the Leisure Industries, CIOMijas, an entity with which the project is intended, as this body of the Junta de Andalucía is a National Reference Centre in Catering and stands out in the training of professionals in tourism, catering and hospitality.

  • La directora del CIOMijas, Raquel Hidalgo, ha apoyado la iniciativa, que se ha presentado en el centro de formación.

For her part, the director of CIOMijas, Raquel Hidalgo, assured that "I think the initiative is fantastic. In addition, we are already collaborating with the Town Hall on various proposals, above all, for the development of the business network and, mainly, in the gastronomic, hotel and catering sector. Remember that we are not only a hotel and catering school, we are also a National Reference Centre, so our scope is the whole territory".

The aim of the programme is to promote the current gastronomic offer in the municipality, supporting and promoting entrepreneurs and businesses, and having local farmers and producers as great allies. Maldonado explained that "it is aimed at entrepreneurs in the catering sector, farmers and producers and also at students in the sector so that they can see that this is a very consolidated job market with many opportunities, which is what we want to generate with this type of initiative".

  • GastronoMijas aspira a aunar los esfuerzos de restauradores, hosteleros, agricultores locales y futuros profesionales del sector turístico.

Working table

Next Wednesday the first of the initiatives will take place in La Butibamba, in La Cala de Mijas, and soon a working group will be set up with the entrepreneurs of the gastronomic sector to shape the municipal programme in accordance with the needs of all of them.
