From the 2nd to the 30th of December, the Mijas Tourist Office will host the exhibition of the Mijas artisans Laura Benavides and JJ Martín Quiroga. With this initiative, the Tourism Department aims to highlight the work done by the artists of the municipality. "We continue to value our artisans, as you can see the work developed by both artists is amazing. Both Laura Benavides and JJ Quiroga have been telling to me how they work and they are great artists", said the councillor responsible for the department, Francisco Jerez (VOX).
Benavides works with polymer clay, a technique in which she started several years ago. "I mainly make accessories, pendants, earrings, brooches... polymer clay is a very versatile material, and when I started, not much was known about it, and little by little I have been learning new techniques, and new ways of treating it’", adding that "what it is all about is modelling, mixing colours, the piece is baked and ends up being a very beautiful accessory”.
For his part, JJ Quiroga works with scrap wood left over from commercial carpentry to create, for example, kitchen tools: "I make wooden spoons, depending on each spoon, some take an hour of sanding and others two, but it is not finished until I am not satisfied with the result, it has to be soft to the touch, as the aim is that it ends up being used as a spoon".
In the Tourist Office in Mijas Pueblo, through the Mijas Craft Association, both artisans will present their work in a free exhibition, which can be visited from the 2nd to the 30th of December, Monday through Friday from 9 to 18 hours and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 to 14 hours.
