A group of 35 children went to the fire station on Thursday 21st to see how they operate and organise their work

The scouts are a youth organisation dedicated to the informal education of children and young people through outdoor activities, community projects and the development of practical skills and values. Such groups are very popular in the English speaking community, but in Mijas they are also present thanks to its British residents. One of them, the 1st Fuengirola Scouts group, based in Mijas, visited the Mijas Fire Station, where, their leader Jenny Boardman, recalled that "thanks to these meetings, children learn and know that if there is a problem, they have to call the fire brigade and ask for help".

In addition, with this visit, the 35 youngsters who attended, aged between six and 14, could win one of the famous scout patches that certify that they have acquired a particular skill. One of the young scouts, Piran Boardman, pointed out that this is "one of our big excursions, which is complemented by the one we did to the police station".

During the activity, the scouts took part in an educational session that included the screening of an educational video and detailed explanations by the firefighting team. The experience allowed the kids to interact, ask questions and learn about the equipment, emergency protocols and the operation of the firefighting vehicles, among other key aspects. They also learned first-hand how firefighters organise and act in an emergency situation, showing the importance of speed and coordination in each intervention.

The councillor for the Mijas Fire Department, Francisco Jerez (Vox), who was present at the visit, considered that these visits "show young people what the Mijas Fire Department represents for everyone, which is something new, impressive, and reminds them that firefighters are people dedicated to saving lives, thanks to the values they have". Thus, said Jerez, "this visit is not only a recognition for their work, but also a way of instilling respect and admiration for those who look after us and ensure that we live safely". Jerez also highlighted the inspirational potential of these activities: "Who knows how many of these young Scouts will become firefighters to protect our neighbours.

In this way, children learn that they can count on the help of the fire brigade and that they should call them in any emergency. The visit concluded with a practical demonstration of the firefighters' equipment and a simulation of the tasks they carry out on a daily basis, teaching them not only a technical lesson, but also a life lesson in the commitment and vocation of public service.
