This Tuesday, energy resources were the focus of the Málaga Metrópolis Global forum, in which Mijas participates on a monthly basis along with other municipalities in Malaga. During the event, organised by the CIEDES Foundation and held in the plenary hall of the Malaga Provincial Council, the main energy needs of the province were discussed, as well as the challenges for the future, among which the commitment to clean energy and energy self-sufficiency stood out.

The meeting was attended by representatives of more than twenty municipalities in Malaga, including the councillor of Mijas, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), who stressed the importance of municipalities investing in sustainability, to promote energy savings and, in turn, economic savings. "I believe that Mijas is very aware of this issue, an example of this is the Department of Energy and Efficiency, which is working on a new tender for a company to be in charge of restructuring more sustainable lighting in the municipality, with the idea of generating the same power but achieving savings", said Gómez Teruel.

Despite the recent rains, drought continues to be another of the problems that the province of Malaga has to face, all the participating municipalities agreed, hence the need for responsible water consumption by the cities. "Here in Mijas we have saved a lot of water with xeriscaping and we are also putting a lot of emphasis on the issue of water leaks, in fact, thanks to the work of the municipal workers we are managing to control this issue", said the councillor.

 

During the meeting, the importance of recycling to prolong the useful life of raw materials and to reduce CO2 emissions was also discussed. The need to ask for a greater commitment from the large energy companies on issues such as burying cables was also stressed, "because the will of the town halls is to improve but it is not always so easy because sometimes the companies do not show the same commitment when it comes, for example, to removing the cable hanging in disuse, which only gives a bad image, so we have to continue to emphasise this, because the municipality belongs to everyone and we all want it to be in the best possible condition", concluded the councillor.

Proposals for action

The municipalities that participated in this forum put forward different proposals for action to combat climate change and its impacts, regulate emissions and promote renewable energies. Among other measures, they considered it appropriate to "integrate the energy component in the new urban plans being developed by the municipalities". More innovative alternatives were also put forward, such as promoting "municipal and provincial solar atlases to visualise the solar potential of buildings" and even ‘"ttracting CO2-consuming industries that can eliminate the CO2 produced by companies already installed".
