On Thursday, many people went back to the racecourse to pick up their pets, although the Town Hall said that "there is no hurry"

Three sheds for horses and one for dogs. This is how the Mijas racecourse was set up for the temporary shelter of animals as a preventive measure in view of the effects that could be caused by the DANA. At mid-morning on Wednesday, the Town Hall announced this facility, which was used by many families in the municipality.

On Thursday, the councillor for livestock, Eloy Belmonte, explained how they organised this measure, "as soon as we knew there was a risk, we set up the operation, prepared the facilities and announced the measure. People were informed and arrived little by little, as a way to prevent and not as an emergency in an extreme situation. Everything has been under control and went perfectly".

In this way, 33 horses and 22 dogs, 18 of them from the Domus animal shelter, spent the night in these facilities, although, Belmonte points out, there was capacity for many more. "In the extreme case that we had run out of space, we had more sheds to fit out. In other words, everything was planned", the councillor pointed out

Early on Thursday, many families were already at the racecourse to pick up their horses and dogs. Although the Town Hall said that there was no rush. "They can pick their animals up during the day or tomorrow. I understand that it is because their facilities, although not damaged, may be full of mud or water, but there is no problem, we will wait for them to clean and prepare the spaces to take in the animals again. Some people are coming to feed their horses; we are here, at their disposal for whatever they need", insisted the councillor.

  • A primeras horas de esta mañana, ya eran muchas las familias que se acercaban hasta el recinto equino a recoger sus caballos y perros.

The families and the Domus animal shelter were grateful for this measure. This was stated by the head of Domus, Jennifer Aro, who said that "most of the Domus animals, those classified as Potentially Dangerous, which do not adapt well in the shelter, have anxiety or act a little aggressively towards other dogs, have been housed at the racecourse, while the rest were taken in by families".

In this way, the shelter thanked the neighbours for their solidarity and, taking advantage of the fact that many of the dogs are still in the shelter, Domus is also working on a thorough cleaning of the centre, disinfecting the facilities.
