The General Directorate of Civil Protection and Emergencies of the Ministry of Domestic Affairs and the Cecem112, which depends on the Ministry of the Presidency, Domestic Affairs, Social Dialogue and Administrative Simplification of the Junta de Andalucía, among other bodies, remind us of a series of safety tips that we should bear in mind in the current adverse weather situation. What are the main preventive measures?
Avoid unnecessary journeys
In a situation like the one we are facing on Wednesday 13th, it is advisable to keep road trips to a minimum. In the event that it is necessary to travel before going out, we should get information about the weather forecast and the state of the roads via the DGT website and the emergency services. If you are going to drive, remember to do so with caution, increasing the safety distance between vehicles and reducing your speed. Also, avoid driving through areas susceptible to flooding such as bridges, tunnels and subways, areas that can accumulate water very quickly posing a high risk. In fact, if you are outdoors during rains and storms you should: try to stay away from rivers, streams and low areas of hillsides and hills, as they can overflow and flood; do not cross flooded fords, as we never know how much water there may be and we could be swept along in the event of a current; do not take shelter under solitary trees because of the risk of lightning and, for the same reason, stay away from wire fences, towers or metallic structures.
Recommendations at home
Other risks associated with heavy rainfall include flooding in our own homes, such as basements and ground floors. It is recommended that we take our belongings to higher areas of the home (valuables, medicines and important documents), as well as food and drinking water in case we need to take shelter. In addition, it is advisable to check that drains are clear to reduce the risk of flooding and to remove anything that could be swept away from the outside. Above all, the most important thing is to avoid low-lying areas, such as garages, and if water has already entered your home or if there is a thunderstorm, it is recommended that you turn off the main electricity switch. It is also important to keep pets indoors or ensure that they are in a safe, enclosed space.
Official sources
To stay informed about the evolution of the DANA, it is advisable to consult the official sources and social networks of the emergency services (112 and Aemet). Avoid spreading rumours, i.e. if you want to share information, you should do so from official sources to avoid confusion and risky situations in our environment.
Instructions from the authorities
It is also especially important to heed and respect the instructions of the competent authorities. We must obey the instructions of the police and fire brigade at all times. If they indicate the evacuation or closure of certain areas, respect their indications. Likewise, collaborate with the emergency teams, avoiding obstructing their work and staying in safe areas.
Additional measures
In addition to the general recommendations, 112 offers additional measures to reinforce everyone's safety during adverse weather phenomena. These are: prepare an emergency kit (including a torch, batteries, bottled water, non-perishable food and a basic first aid kit in case the situation is prolonged), communicate your plans to family and friends (if you are going out, for example, you should let someone know your destination and route in case any problems arise).
