At the beginning of October, the Town Hall began cleaning up the streams following an action plan, stated the mayoress Ana Mata (PP): “There is a planning that takes into account which are the most problematic areas when there are torrential rains. Therefore, we are going to continue working on perfecting these measures so that, at a time of adverse weather like this past week in Valencia, we have as little damage as possible”.
Operational Services is the department carrying out this work. Up to four teams with heavy machinery such as the one that worked on Wednesday 6th in the María Barranco stream (Las Lagunas) are spread across the different streams. The councillor responsible, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), explained that “we have always worked, firstly, on the streams that are closest to the urban centres, and then we work on the outskirts, on the perimeters, to give the main stream a better outlet”. Gómez Teruel added that “the latest rains, which have registered up to 160 litres in the municipality, have not caused any incident, which shows that the work has been done properly”. This action in the streams has also avoided, according to the councillor, problems on the coast: “This preventive work that we do throughout the year, in this flooding that we have had with these rains, has prevented the Mijas coastline from accumulating a lot of reeds or vegetation, which in other years we have had, having to clean beaches for months; today, however, the entire coastline has been cleaned”.
Streams
Work has already been carried out on the following streams: El Chaparral, La Cala, El Moro, El Zoco, Bárcena, Limonar, Algaida, La Lucera, El Bombo, Calahonda, El Charcón, El Maestro and many more. Practically all the streams in the municipality are now clean, but they assure us that they will continue with these tasks until March, cleaning at least 15 kilometres of watercourses. “We have to try to ensure that our municipality of Mijas, due to its situation, its size and all the surrounding houses, is as clean as possible without having any kind of problem,’ said the mayoress, who wanted to “reassure all the neighbours, as there are many who have contacted us asking about the risks in their areas, because there is a plan for the whole area”.
The mayoress also appealed to residents not to deposit rubbish, rubble or household items in the streams, but to do so at the points designated for this purpose, as this uncivic gesture can cause blockages at the mouths of the streams.
