On Wednesday 6th, the Torre Almenara and La Cala secondary schools took part in a talk on the importance of conserving and caring for posidonia meadow. ‘Get to know in order to protect’, that is the motto of this environmental awareness campaign launched by the Foundation Aula del Mar y Mares Circulares (FAMM) in collaboration with the Town Hall, as part of the Bosques Sumergidos (Submerged Forests) project. Its aim is to inform young people about the existence of the Posidonia meadows in Mijas so that they are aware of their high environmental value, with a view to promoting and conserving these marine environments. .
Isabel Benítez, Isabel Benítez, a biologist from the Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation, explained that ‘Bosques Sumergidos is focusing on the conservation of the oceanic posidonia meadows. This species is a marine plant exclusive to the Mediterranean, and although many people don’t know about it, even people who have lived here all their lives, it is very important. This species provides food and cleans the waters where it is found. In Mijas, there are two areas within the Special Area of Conservation (SAC): one in Punta de Calaburra and the other one in Calahonda.
The talks took place between the 4th and the 8th of November at the La Cala Branch Office and at the premises of some schools. According to the councillor for the Environment, Marco Cortés (PP), “250 students from La Cala area will attend the talks. The Aula del Mar Mediterráneo Foundation is going to raise awareness of the posidonia meadows and their importance in our marine environment”.
According to Cristina Moreno, director of Training Projects and Citizen Participation of the FAMM, “with these actions we want young people to be aware of the importance of this marine ecosystem in their municipality and to protect them. They call them the lungs of the sea. In addition, they retain sand from the beaches acting as authentic natural reefs and are refuges for more than a thousand different species”.
