Mijas promotes itself as a unique destination at the World Travel Market

The municipality promoted the golf sector with the aim of breaking the seasonality and attracting this sport tourism

More than 4,000 professionals from the sector and some 5,000 tourist destinations met until the 7th of November at Excel London on the occasion of the World Travel Market (WTM). Mijas was present at this fair, one of the most important international tourism events, which brought together the main agents, institutions and operators in the sector. The local councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez (Vox), and the head of the department, Juan Carlos Acevedo, travelled to the capital of the United Kingdom.

The municipality was presented to visitors as a unique destination for the “sensory and evocative experience it offers”, with the campaign ‘Mijas, as you like it’. The objective, said the councillor for Tourism, is “to fulfil an agenda of meetings and gatherings with different operators to reinforce the positioning of Mijas in the international market and to work in new markets”. “We are already holding meetings and working groups with Canadian tour operators. We want them to come to Mijas. So far it is an unknown market for us, but it has great possibilities. Their winter is very harsh and here they can find an enviable climate with a temperature of 20 degrees and many sunny days, which can be very attractive for them at this time of year”, said Jerez.

The councillor also highlighted "the important work that the tourist offices carry out in the town, it is a gateway for tourists and they offer an efficient, very professional and attentive service", as reflected in the statistics, which show that the British market occupies almost 20% of the queries they deal with, being the most numerous traveller after the national tourist.

There is no doubt that the golf segment is absolutely essential for Mijas and for fulfilling another of its objectives: to break the seasonality. Not only because of the number of courses, but also because of their quality and routes, features that place the municipality in a very advantageous and privileged position to attract a visitor that brings great benefits. “To talk about golf is to talk about quality tourism, a differentiated offer and commitment, and Mijas is a benchmark in this sport and a key operator.  In fact, it gathers 17% of the courses on the Costa del Sol, being the second municipality with the largest offer”, said Jérez.  The latest data recorded show that, since the pandemic, the average expenditure of golf tourists in Mijas has risen from 120 euros per day to more than 200 euro. In addition, Mijas is a leader in golf tourism packages.  

For all these reasons, according to the councillor for Tourism, “the presence of Mijas at the World Travel Market will have a special impact in this area. In fact, the promotion of the 1st Mijas Sun & Golf golf circuit, held from June to August, which involved six golf courses in the municipality, highlights the strategic nature of this sector and, moreover, with the help of  ‘Mijas, as you like it’, the municipality consolidates and strengthens its position in the golf tourism sector”.
