Since Monday, many people have come to this building to donate food and basic goods for the victims of the DANA

The citizens of Mijas have shown so much solidarity these days, after the terrible DANA hit Valencia, Castilla La Mancha and some villages in Malaga, that it has been necessary to free up space in the old fire station in Mijas, where, since Monday, food and other materials are being collected for the victims. According to the local policeman and coordinator of Civil Protection Mijas, David Gutiérrez, Mijas has already sent a couple of lorries to Bancosol, where the goods will be stored until they are sent to Valencia in the coming days, all with the collaboration of the Malaga Provincial Council.

"We are in direct contact with the Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, which this morning (Tuesday 2nd) told us that right now they are quite overloaded, because they have received goods from all the municipalities of Spain, so we have taken the decision to transport everything we have here and leave it at Bancosol, which has much more space, until they give us the authorization to take the pallets to Valencia", explained the officer, adding that "even so, the neighbours can continue to make their donations here in the old fire station, from 10: 00 to 14:00 hours and from 17:00 to 20:00 hours".

  • La antigua nave de bomberos se ha quedado pequeña ante tanta solidaridad.

For the moment, said Manuel Fuentes, a Civil Protection volunteer, involvement is at an all-time hight, "because people are bringing everything, cleaning and hygiene products, food... We are putting everything on pallets, everything classified, so that people know what is inside. We have 65 pallets ready, but we want and we are sure that there will be many more".

Likewise, Gutiérrez stressed again, "there are establishments from all over the municipality, associations, hotels and countless people who are collaborating and want to continue donating which is important, because from Valencia they have reported that assistance will continue to be needed for many weeks to come".

Tuesday marked one week since the tremendous rains that hit different parts of Spain, wreaking havoc especially in Valencia, where more than 200 people have died and many people are still missing. "I hope that all the help we are offering reaches all these people, these children, these elderly", said Luz María Real, who went on Tuesday to the building to make a donation, "I would like it to be much more but I earn very little, but they need it more than I do right now".

Las donaciones de la ciudadanía están siendo muy numerosas y de todo tipo.

Also in Mijas, young people are setting an example, like Luz Rosales, who since Monday has been lending a hand at the old fire station and in everything she can. "Yesterday I was here al afternoon and today I arrived in the morning to help with the pallets. I think it is necessary, they need a lot in Valencia, and I know it because I have friends who live there", she said.

The DANA arrived with a lot of water, too much, but these days it is also awakening a lot of feelings among the citizens. "I still can't believe everything that is happening, what a shame, I am a mother and I put myself in the shoes of these families, and it must be very har"’, said the neighbour Melania Real.

Also on a provisional basis, all the clothes and textiles that have been collected over the past few days, which could exceed 25,000 kilos, are being stored in the FCC building for later distribution.
