Soroptimist International Costa del Sol made a new donation to the Mijas food bank on Wednesday. After receiving several grants and donations of its own, the NGO delivered basic foodstuffs such as milk, oil, pasta and rice along with a large batch of fresh vegetables worth 1,000 euros.
The donation was made at the headquarters of the Food Bank, located in Las Lagunas next to Cruz Roja Mijas. The president of the local NGO, Daphne Theunissen, pointed out that "we are fortunate that, from time to time, we receive donations from other companies and organisations who know us and like the way we work. So if we receive money, we give that money too, and what better way than to give it to the Food Bank". The president also explained that "on this occasion, we have received a donation from the Helene-Bonnnik Hansen Foundation. They are German and Danish people who have several companies and are always looking for initiatives to collaborate with".
Soroptimist has been working with the Food Bank for 10 years now. They make two or three important annual donations, this time worth 1,000 euros. Thanks to this help, the number of families assisted by this municipal resource, which is managed locally by the Mijas Red Cross, can be increased. In total, these batches of food will help more than 400 families in Mijas, said Maria Martinez, vice president of the local assembly of the Red Cross. "Soroptimist is always exceptional. Thanks to these private donations we are able to help many families. At the moment we only have donations from two large supermarkets, plus this one that the NGO Soroptimist makes periodically makes", she said.
For her part, the councillor for Social Inclusion, Melisa Ceballos (PP), also present at the donation, thanked "the important work that this NGO and all its volunteers do in our municipality. Their donations are very important for the food bank as we do not receive food donations from the EU".
The role of the Mijas Food Bank is essential for many families who receive help in difficult economic times. The families are supervised by the Social Services, who monitor and control the situation of each one of them. This year, it seems that the EU has not made the usual food donation, so they are only receiving private and individual donations.
