This Sunday, 6th of October, the third Villa de Mijas Alzheimer's Route will take place, organised by the Mijas Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's Patients (AFA Mijas), with the collaboration of Bar El Niño, the hiking group Tamarita and different sponsors. The first two editions of this route were carried out in 2018 and 2019 but the initiative could not be resumed until now due to the pandemic and the fire in the Sierra de Mijas in 2022.
The route will start at 10 hours at the Los Arenales Quarry and will end at noon in front of the Bar El Niño in Mijas Pueblo, where a paella will be offered for all attendees. During the route, participants will make a stop at the new Memory Bench, the second placed by AFA Mijas, which this time is located in Puerto del Pino, "a very popular spot for hikers who go to Pico Mijas and Pico Málaga". José Miguel Álvarez, member of AFA Mijas and the Taramita group highlighted that “this new wooden bench has been donated by the owner of the Bar El Niño and the Mijas Town Hall has been in charge of adapting the area where it is placed, and the truth is that it looks beautiful".
Registration costs six euros, which also includes paella and a drink in front of Juan Marín's bar, a partner of the event. "In the second edition of the route more than 200 people participated, we did not expect so many people and it was a success", recalled Marín, adding that “we also want everyone who reaches the bench to take a photo and share it on social media to give more visibility to the initiative and, above all, to Alzheimer's disease”.
It will be a sporting event, because the route is easy to walk but is about 13 kilometres long, round trip. It will also be an environmental event, because the participants will run through the Sierra de Mijas, including the part that was affected by the fire in 2022. But the most important thing is that this activity will also have its solidarity side, as all the proceeds will go to the Mijas Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's Patients. "Obviously we want to raise funds for the association, but this event will also help us to let the public know about our services and where we are, and also to continue raising awareness of Alzheimer's disease, which is still there, it is still progressing and we need a lot of help from everyone", summarised Mari Carmen López, director and psychologist at the AFA Mijas Day Centre.
Finally, the councillor for Sports of the Mijas Town Hall, Mari Francis Alarcón (PP), took advantage of this presentation to "invite everyone to participate in this route because, in addition to taking a pleasant walk through the Sierra de Mijas, we will also be collaborating with AFA Mijas, which does a very important and beneficial social work for all users".
You can buy your tickets throughout the week at the AFA Mijas centre and at the Bar El Niño, both located in Mijas Pueblo. You can also do it the same day of the route, at the Cantera de los Arenales, from 9:30 hours. Those who want to collaborate but can not attend the event can also do it.
