The 22 youth volunteers of AFA Mijas were all smiles on Sunday 15th of September when they enjoyed a day of fun at the Aquamijas facilities thanks to the collaboration of the Youth Department of the Mijas Town Hall, which provided them with tickets to the local water park.
It is a symbolic reward for their generosity and solidarity, as they have dedicated part of their summer holidays to the users of the AFA Mijas day centre, as part of the cognitive stimulation programme. "They have had conversations with the elderly, they have exchanged experiences, the fact that they have come to the centre and have had these interactions, is in itself stimulating for our seniors and also has many benefits for the young people", said the director and psychologist of the AFA Mijas day centre, Mari Carmen López, who pointed out that a total of 28 young people have been part of the volunteer programme during this summer period.
The experience has been rewarding for these volunteers, as Ylenia García says: "It's a very nice thing because you can help the elderly and you are satisfied". For his part, Javier Oliver points out that he signed up to "help the grandparents and the experience has been very good".
From his time at the day centre, new friendships remain forever, as is the case of Oliver, who has the affection of Ángela, one of the users: ‘"ngela is very kind, although she says that she does the exercises wrong, she actually does them very well. We are very fond of them".
They assure that they will repeat as volunteers and that they haven't done it for the prize (one day at the water park). "Last year I was a volunteer and this year I have volunteered again. Last time I couldn't come to the water park, but even if they didn't bring us here, I would have signed up anyway", said García.
