He arrived in Mijas in 1984, after having been a priest in other municipalities in the province, and has dedicated 40 years of his life to Las Lagunas. When he arrived, masses were held in the small chapel of Nuestra Señora de Fátima, as the parish church of San Manuel González, where he celebrated his last mass on Friday 6th, did not even exist. The parish priest José María Ramos, who in 2022 received a tribute from the Bishopric for his 50 years of priestly life, has given himself to his community. "Half of my life has been dedicated to Las Lagunas with the same enthusiasm and joy as on that first day. It is worth it", Ramos summed up.
In these four decades in Las Lagunas he has officiated many masses, but Friday's mass stood out for its emotion, as he was surrounded by family, friends and faithful, whom he thanked for their support during these 40 years: "‘I have walked with them and along the way we have been through everything".
Dedication "body and soul"
The Christian community of Las Lagunas highlighted the work of José María Ramos and his role in the construction of the parish. Emilio José Alguacil, elder brother of the Jesús Vivo Brotherhood, highlighted that the mass "was a very emotional act after 40 years of priesthood, of dedication, body and soul, to the parish in every possible way"; he also emphasised that "it is a well-deserved retirement" that now begins for the former parish priest of Las Lagunas "after fighting so hard to build the parish and to raise it up".
Now, after retiring, José María Ramos will be there to help in any way he can and with a clear idea about his future: "Live, don't you think that's not enough? and try to be happy every day". He will also spend time praying, reading and visiting, something he has not been able to do due to his parish duties.
