On Wednesday 4th the Mijas Fair opened with the parade that announced the beginning of the festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Peñ. The mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), carried out the traditional ribbon cutting with the outgoing king and queen in their last official act, after which she pressed the button to switch on the almost 400,000 LED lights of the artistic lighting. Mata inaugurated the fairground together with the government team, the Junta de Festejos, local authorities, groups and neighbours. On this first day, the king and queen of the Mijas Fair 2024 were crowned, with Vidal Pagés Blanco elected as king of the Mijas Fair and Nuria de Rechter as queen; Álvaro Carretero, Mister Elegance; Álvaro Fernández, Mister Congeniality; Lucía Ruiz Burgos, Miss Congeniality; Carmen Jaime Galán, second lady of honour and Violeta María Mengíbar Pérez, first lady of honour.
The young singer from Seville, Marta Santos, winner of a gold record, rounded off a first day that invites you to continue enjoying the fair until Monday 9th of September.
Coinciding with the opening day, the mayoress visited the Mijas Comunicacion stand, where she said that “there is no fair like the one in Mijas Pueblo and that has this location. This Mijas fair does not conclude the circuit of fairs at an Andalusian level, but without a doubt there are many people who are watching it because here, fun, is guaranteed”. Mata stated that it is a fair that “at provincial and even regional level, is also very popular”, to which she added that “this is my first year as mayoress so I want everything to turn out well but, as always, I entrust myselfto the Virgen de la Peña so that everything turns out as it should, wonderfully”.
Day fair
Mijas inaugurated on Thursday 5 its day fair in the gardens of La Muralla. We have the privilege of enjoying these days of the fair during the day and then continue in the afternoon and evening in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña. We must enjoy and spend some time with our neighbors and with all those who come to visit us”, said Mata. For her part, the Councillor for Festivities and Traditions, Silvia Marin (PP), said that “I want to invite not only the Mijeños but also all those who visit us to come here, we have a great atmosphere, with excellent views, everyone is invited”. On thursday, the party was enlivened by A Compás and Maníacos. The festivities have just begun, until Monday 9th you can enjoy the day fair.
Thursday 6th
The second day of the night fair, Thursday 5th of September, was dedicated to the senior citizens. As every year, the Mijas Town Hall offered a tribute dinner for the elderly in which 327 residents of the village enjoyed a menu consisting of Iberian cured meats, prawns, gazpacho, delicious meat with sauce and an almond cake for dessert.
During the event, celebrated in the Municipal Booth, the attendees were also presented with a pot of Cyclamen to take home. On stage, the mayoress of Mijas, Ana Mata (PP), addressed a few words to the seniors to whom she said that “you have a very young spirit. You are people who really want to have a good time, and we are at a dinner that the Town Hall has organised with great affection so that you can enjoy the fair and to thank you”, she also invited them to “be active and participate in this fair”. Finally, the councillor wished them “a happy evening and I hope you enjoyed it”. For her part, the councillor for Festivities and Traditions, Silvia Marín (PP), said that “it’s a great night. The elderly are enjoying the evening, which is what we want, because this event is for them, so we have achieved our goal”.
To liven up the evening, the orchestra Ritmo Andaluz Show offered a musical performance that lasted around two hours, during which the guests were able to dance to some Spanish pop classics.
Finally, during the evening there was also a draw to choose the Grandfather and Grandmother of the Mijas Fair 2024. Julián Mata and Francisco Ramírez were the two lucky winners who will be able to enjoy their gift, a dinner for two at a restaurant in Mijas valued at 70 euros.
