Some 80 people, convened by the social media group run by the French resident Anne Blitz, advocated on Thursday 22nd in Mijas Pueblo for the stoppage of the donkey taxi and horse-drawn carriage activity, proposing alternatives such as the creation of shelters and sanctuaries and their replacement by electric tuk tuks. 

“We want a fair deal for everyone and for this medieval activity to stop”, said Blitz.  “[The mayoress] Ana Mata has done a great job, she has set up an Animal Welfare area and they are doing a lot of things to help the donkeys, but things can’t be done in a day”, she said. The conveners urged tourists not to ride the donkeys, especially if they are over the permitted weight. 

Municipal measures

The Town Hall has increased the number of shaded areas and drinking troughs, and the ropes have been lengthened so that the donkeys have more resting space. Likewise, the reports of regular veterinary checks are published on the municipal website with complete transparency, work is being done to modify the sector’s by-laws and a decree has been published limiting the activity in the event of extreme temperatures. 

The muleteers reminded us that “the donkeys are in good condition, they have a medical check-up every six months, insurance,  vet, everything is in order. The Town Hall requires us to do so”, explained Antonio Jiménez, muleteer.  Representatives of equestrian groups and veterinarians also guaranteed the good condition of the animals.
