The councillor for Parks and Gardens of Mijas Town Hall, Daniel Gómez Teruel (PP), took stock of the work carried out to improve the different green areas of the municipality in order to optimise their condition. In total, during the month of July, more than a hundred interventions have been carried out by the municipal workers.
In addition to the repair, cleaning and maintenance work, water leaks have also been repaired, something which the councillor described as ‘’essential‘’ in order to optimise irrigation and given the severe drought situation. In this regard, the councillor detailed that water supply systems have been repaired in La Unión Street, as well as in the gardens of Avenida Sáenz de Tejada and in the streets Velillos, Verónica, Río Nacimiento and Camino Viejo de Coín, among others. “We are very scrupulous when it comes to water, but nowadays even more so because of the drought. Some organisations estimate that 20% of water is lost due to leaks in Spain, so as soon as we detect any damage, we act, although prevention and supervision is also fundamental. We use water very responsibly and we ask the entire population to do the same”, Gómez said.
On the other hand, the Department of Parks and Gardens continues to use xeriscaping as a way of beautifying the municipality using plants that require little watering and which are supported by decorative elements such as pine bark, volcanic rock or river pebbles. During July, this gardening system was used on the outside of the roundabout at the entrance to La Cala de Mijas, where in addition to placing an anti-weed mesh, blue and green crushed glass and white pebbles were used to simulate the Mijas flag. Plantations have also been made around the perimeter of the La Cala petanque club, plants have been replaced in the promenade of La Muralla, in the boulevard of La Cala, in the Virgen de la Peña Square and in the La Cala Branch office, among other places.
Water Park improvements
The councillor for Parks and Gardens also highlighted the good functioning of the Water Park, located in Las Cañadas, which has a closed water circuit, offering a quick solution to the heat for many families. Among the improvements that have been carried out are the replacement of the awnings in some of the shaded areas and the improvement of the rubber flooring in the children’s play area. “Since we started in November we have been working to ensure that the park is in perfect condition, especially in terms of saving water”, he said.
In this regard, Gómez stressed that this park has an employee in charge of maintenance to ensure the correct functioning of the water jets and to solve, almost on the same day, any breakdowns that may occur in the system.
