Mijas continues to collaborate with solidarity and animal causes. Last Friday, 9th of August, the Andalusian Rescue Centre for Horses (ARCH) held a charity auction in Mijas Pueblo, where the attendees bid for photographs, paintings and ceramics donated by different artists and individuals. "The auction is a silent auction. I don't think people are used to it and they don't know how it works. They have a piece of paper with each painting and people put what they want to pay for the work, for example 100 euros, then another person comes along and says they intend to pay 150 or 200 euros", explained Jill Newman Rogers, president of the collective, during the event. 

 

For the celebration of this charity event, the centre was supported by the Mijas Town Hall and Amor a Málaga. "I would like Amor a Málaga to be an establishment where not only local products are presented, but also where events are held in collaboration with altruistic associations and collectives dedicated to art or animals and, of course, local ones", said the owner of the establishment, located on Calle Málaga in Mijas Pueblo, María Cabello. For his part, the councillor for Culture of Mijas, Juan Carlos Maldonado (PMP), said that "what we also want is that through Culture we participate in this promotion of business, as an interesting thread of Culture; and, in this case, with a very sensitive background issue as it is what this association ARCH defends, as is caring for the horses that are in a vulnerable situation. From the Town Hall we will continue to collaborate in this line so that the objectives are achieved". 

Like most animal groups, this association also depends on volunteers. As with most animal welfare groups, this association also functions thanks to volunteers. Ellen Wagner, head of the volunteer department of the Andalusian Horse Rescue Centre, pointed out that "there are people who look after the horses, there are people who collaborate with administrative tasks, others help in the charity shop, others paint... there are many things to do but, above all, caring and looking after the horses". 

 

15 years rescuing abused horses 

The Andalusian Rescue Centre for Horses (www.horserescuespain.org) has been rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming abused horses for 15 years. "We are a registered charity organisation and we work closely with Seprona and the local police, as we have no confiscation powers", explained the group. The centre functions thanks to donations, the charity shop in Alhaurín el Grande and the organisation of events, but the help, although very welcome, is not enough to cover the expenses that the 26 horses that are cared for at the centre require. "Most of them come from the Huelva area, from the border with Portugal. We have to pay, therefore, for transport, the vet, the trial, as we take the abusers to court, in other words, there are a lot of expenses", added the president, Jill Newman Rogers, who also reported that the Andalusian Horse Rescue Centre, together with other groups, has created the Spanish Federation of Associations against Animal Abuse, "the idea is that all the associations who work with equines should unite, to have more power, to talk to the government, so that they give us more subsidies, pay more attention to us and make laws for horses as well".
