  • The fire spread through the area, affecting some 3,000 square metres
  • El fuego se iniciaba a las 12:30 horas.

Everything seems to indicate that an engine failure in the shuttle bus was the cause of the flames which, in a few minutes, burnt the vehicle to the ground

At 14:30 hourson Wednesday, the fire that started at around 12:30 hours on the same day was declared stabilised. The fire was caused by the shuttle bus, which started to burn while it was on the road. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

This fire, which occurred in the area of the El Puerto Quarry, is said to have been caused by an engine failure in the shuttle bus, which links the El Puerto Quarry with Mijas Pueblo.

According to the councillor for the Fire Brigade, Francisco Jerez, "the cause may be a fault in the bus engine, but to confirm this, an expert will have to study it. At the time of the accident there were no passengers except for the driver, who was unhurt. Her quick action, together with the action of the Mijas Fire Brigade and the rest of the emergency services, was crucial to prevent the fire from spreading".

The councillor for operational services, Daniel Gómez Teruel, explained that the situation was alarming, especially for the area in which the fire broke out, but the rapid action of the police, operational services, fire brigade, the Infoca, which appeared soon, and also the helicopters and aerial means, have fortunately prevented the fire from having a major impact.

The fire, in just a few minutes, spread through the area, affecting the adjoining pine forest. This forced the Infoca troops to move there and work on extinguishing the fire with land and air resources. Two hours later the Infoca announced the stabilisation of the fire.

As Jerez said, "it was a very rapid intervention because it just so happened that a local policeman was driving up the road when he saw the bus that was smoking but there were no flames yet. The policeman was the one who made the call".

Operational Services also sent their bucket lorries as well as a backhoe to help with the work. Also with human resources, as the operators have been at all times facilitating the work of the firefighters.

Approximately 3,000 square metres were burnt and 50 pine trees were destroyed.

That same day, at 19:10 hours the Infoca declared the fire, that started at around 12:30 hours in this area of the Sierra de Mijas, to be extinguished.
