The first thing that the president Manuel Cardeña pointed out is that, in just one year, the Association of Municipalities of the Costa del Sol has managed to reduce its debt to zero "thanks to the efforts of all the mayors of the coast and the updating of different rates".
Different solutions have also been taken to try to alleviate the serious drought problem that exists in the area. Among the measures, an investment of 350 million euros has been set aside to reduce water consumption in the municipalities and to extend the use of regenerated water. As the president of the Mancomunidad explained, ‘the production volume of regenerated water is 40 hectometres, but only seven are being used, so it is necessary to continue working to bring this water to all the municipalities so that the 100% can be used for flushing and irrigation of golf courses, and so we can reduce the pressure on the reservoir and the desalination plant".
The Mancomunidad is also working with the Junta de Andalucía to promote a second desalination plant on the Costa del Sol. Cardeña stressed that "as soon as the canon is operational, which will probably be in October, one of the first actions to be carried out will be the tendering of the preliminary project and project of this infrastructure", he said.
This year has also seen major steps towards recycling. For example, the Casares plant, which depends on the Mancomunidad, "has become the first in Spain to recycle coffee capsules. On the other hand, the way to collect seaweed from the coastline to transform it into compost is being studied".
In the same way, he went on to explain that "the Environment award was achieved thanks to the recycling and environmental awareness classroom in the plant, which continues to be a benchmark, not only in the way and amount it recycles, but also in its innovative approach, all of this to make the Costa del Sol more efficient and environmentally friendly".
The Mancomunidad is also optimistic about the latest meetings held by the different administrations, in which the need has been expressed, on the one hand, to free up the motorway toll and, on the other, to speed up the coastal train project. Cardeña hopes that these advances are not just words and electoral promises. "I don't not want the AP7 issue to be a campaign slogan, but I want it to be a reality, because everything is at stake", he said.
Finally, he thanked the citizens in the Costa del Sol "for their support and the joint efforts that will be made to provide the Costa del Sol with infrastructures, so that the objectives set for the next period can be achieved".
