The Mijas Music Band offers a tribute concert in memory of Juan Antonio Gómez

  • This summer is the 14th anniversary of his disappearance
  • La banda de música ofreció un concierto en la plaza Virgen de la Peña

His family keeps his memory alive and every year organises an event to remember his disappearance

Last Saturday 20th of July the Mijas Music Band offered a concert in tribute to Juan Antonio Gómez, from Mijas, on the 14th anniversary of his disappearance. The Virgen de la Peña square was the setting for this concert which included soundtracks, and popular pop and rock songs. The family once again asked for this cause to be remembered. Under the direction of Francisco Jesús Valcárcel, the Music Band, once again, supported this cause in Mijas. The director stated that "we are always here for anyone who wants our collaboration, for the municipality, for any association, collective, and issue.  Whenever they need us, the Band will be there. We are going to offer a concert featuring the music that Juan Antonio liked. We came to an agreement with the family and they asked us to play soundtrack songs and popular classics".

  • Carmen Goméz, hermana del desaparecido habló en nombre de la familia.

This year, on the day of his disappearance, Juan Antonio's family wanted to organise an event like this, thanks to the collaboration of the Town Hall and the UP's cultural workshops, in order to maintain his memory. Carmen Gómez, one of his sisters, said that "Juan Antonio, as well as being a sports and nature lover, was also a music lover, he was passionate about music. This event was my sister Ana's initiative, who is always thinking of different proposals. We are going to play soundtracks, mythical rock songs in Juan's style. It's going to be very nice. We are very grateful to the Banda de Música de Mijas and the UP because they always get involved. After 14 years, it's wonderful that they continue to show their support, we really appreciate it".

The concert included a wide repertoire of soundtrack songs such as Chariots of Fire, Robin Hood, Titanic, or Morricone, in the first part. One of the musicians, Juan Rodríguez and his daughter Valentina performed a Metallica song, and in the second part they offered great songs such as ‘The Prince of Egypt’, ‘Rocky’, ‘Braveheart’ or the mythical songs ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘The Final Countdown’, all songs with their own adaptation by the band.

The councillors Melisa Ceballos and Mari Francis Alarcón came to support the event. According to Ceballos "today we wanted to be here with the family to accompany them. It is a sad day as it has been 14 years since the disappearance of Juan Antonio. The family has not stopped looking for him, always trying to find any clue. After so many years, it is to be admired that they are still fighting".

  • Desde el Ayuntamiento de Mijas también se apoyó el evento.
