The history of Boabdil opens the XXXVIII Villa de Mijas Theatre Festival

  • Genís Campillo's company, led by himself, performed a version of his life through poetry, dance and flamenco and Andalusian singing
  • Puesta en escena de Boabdil, con todos sus integrantes.

The Festival was held until Sunday at the Miguel González Berral Auditorium in Mijas Pueblo

The 38th edition of the Villa de Mijas Theatre Festival started on Thursday night with the play ‘Boabdil’, by the theatre company Genís Campillo. It starred Genís Campillo himself, actor and playwright, who presented a monologue with two characters played by a single actor. Emotion, psychology, history, magic and medieval music fused with flamenco came together in this show.

"With Boabdil we do, on the one hand, a review of the Nasrid dynasty, the kingdom of Granada, the Alhambra and the whole magical, poetic and mystical concept of the creators of the Alhambra, and on the other, part of the history of Andalusia and Spain at that time", he said.

The play has already toured different parts of Spain and during the weekend it came to Mijas, something that for the actor was very "exciting and satisfying, because great artists have performed at this festival and the venue is magical".

One of the attendees at this first event, Mar García, said that "I usually come to the festival every year and the truth is that for people who don't have access to the theatre it is a very good way to enjoy culture for free, and what better way than to do it on a perfect night and in an ideal place like this one".

Professionals in the field did not want to miss the festival, as was the case of Paco Cabrera, founder of his own theatre company, Grisol Teatro, which is also performing the play Boabdil, and who told us about this historical character, "it is very interesting to learn about Boabdil's life. How he suffered, how he lived having to do things he didn't want to, knowing that he was a peaceful being whose mother encouraged him to be a warrior", he said.

The play was full of poetry and reverie, always accompanied by the notes of Pepe Aguado's guitar and Carlos Cruz's flamenco voice, as well as Sandra Zárate's heartfelt dancing. Boabdil mixed gesture, emotion, Andalusian and Sephardic music, flamenco and medieval romance on stage.
