‘Fritos con Arte’ (Fried with Art) is the name of the first Contest of fried fish from Málaga, organised by the Gastronomic Academy of Malaga and sponsored, among others, by the Provincial Council, through ‘Sabor a Málaga’. The La Familia beach bar in La Cala, which has become one of the finalists, is taking part in the competition.
This business, with a history of twenty years in the municipality, is one of the establishments on the Mijas coast that opens for the longest period of the year, from February to December.
As the manager of the beach bar, Ramón Velasco explained, "we really like to eat, the good food, so everything that promotes Malaga’s gastronomy is important to us". As he said, "people who come to Málaga appreciate the fried food we have, as here, it tastes like nowhere else".
The president of the Gastronomic Academy, Manolo Tornay, added that the aim of this event is “to promote the local produce, the producers, the establishments and the traditional recipes, so there is no better dish to represent the tradition of our cuisine than a ‘fritura malagueña’ (fried fish from Málaga)”.
A total of 15 establishments from all over the province are taking part in the competition and today, they are competing for the prize, in a final phase in which they have to prepare a traditional fried dish from Malaga and a fried anchovy dish.
Tornay explained that “It is not easy to properly fry fish. The most important thing is to have a good product, a good supplier, quality flour and oil and the right temperature. So has he said, "If we are able to combine all this, the excellence of the dish is more than guaranteed”.
Participants will also receive recognition from the general public, who have been voting until today for their favourite beach bar at https://academiagastronomica.com thus entering a draw to win a meal at the winning establishment.
